Hey Pat
Blah! The honours all mine, man. Tis not everyday I get to put some scrumptious bum on the site ya know? You really made my day with your comment though (although admittedly watching change of heart is usually the highlight of my day...so, it's not much of an accomplishment to actually make my day. )
Seriously, I really appreciate your comment...doubly so since you're incredibly talented. Maybe since you're a fan, I could goad you into writing a little somethin' somethin'? eg. Interview, tutorial or something? I've been lazy lately and havn't done an article in ages so you doing one, would mean I could be lazy for another few months.
Anyways, thanks for the comment man. Oh yeah, and a tip...don't be viewing 3D Palette around your girlfriend. If she gets a look at the staff, you might find yourself single, and I'd feel bad if that happened.

Nice work, Pat!
I've never seen any of your paintings. I only know that Elin mentioned in the past that you are a good artist.
Great stuff. Definitely post more.
Tell her I said hi.

Been pretty busy with an upcoming Monday deadline. I did manage to crank out another little image though. This one was a freaky color study of a photo in one of my girlfriend's fashion mags. Basically, the thinking here was to try and use colors in a way I wouldn't normally use them in a portrait. I wasn't too successful on the thinking end of it, so I ended up using PS to warp some of the colors and then painted over them. Oh well, you win some you lose some.
Immi - I'd do a demo for you in a heartbeat! Can you email me with what you need @ [email protected] and I'll get on it ASAP! Any suggestions for a topic?
Lunatique - Hey, I remember meeting you in San Diego. Howzit going? Last I heard, you were working with 3DO --but judging from your website you're with someone else now. Cool.
TheMilkMan - heh, thanks for the comments. I'm no where near as talented as Spooge. There's a maturity to his work that's truly awe-inspiring. I'll never have his level of talent --and there's nothing I can do about that --but, I can do something about the pace at which I work. By forcing myself to paint faster and harder than before I'll rack up the experience I need to get better. What I wasn't blessed with at birth I'll earn through sheer force of will! I'll see if I can't find some older material to post, embarrassing as that might be!
rdgraffx - I can't seem to figure out how to export my custom brushes from Painter. I want to make them available to other Mac users, but I don't know how. The painter manual is pretty confusing concerning this matter and I *don't* want to accidently erase them. If no one can help me, I can write down the brush variant values so you can simply recreate the brush with your copy of Painter. |

I know how you feel Pat. I'm more of a Photoshop user myself. From having a quick look at Painter just then, it looks like you open up the Brush Mover (from your 'brush' palete), create a new file on the right hand side to save a copy of your brushes in, and simply drag across the brush groups you want. Does that help?
If not, I'd still love to know the values.
Thanks for this Pat, you're a saint.

rdgraffix - Yeah, it does help. I tried following the instructions from the help menu (it takes you to a pretty cool PDF file I never knew was there) but I thought that brush mover thing was deleting my brush from the menu, so I cancelled out. I'll give it another shot!

That was pretty easy! Ok, I've got 3 brushes --the two I was refering to and one that's in progress. You can download them here:
http://www.radiocomix.com/forum/funky.sit
You will need Stuffit Expander to access this file. It's ~5K. Please note this is a Mac Painter 6 file and will *not* work on a PC.
Inside the file called "funky" are 3 brushes. Big Funk, Funky brush and a palette knife. I do most of my work using Big Funk. As I mentioned in a previous post I block colors in using misc chalk tools and the opaque round brush. Once I go into the medium details I switch to the Big Funk. Don't forget to set the "brush tracking" values in preferences each time you boot Painter. This helps a lot. I generally use the brush from about 10-30 pixels. Any larger and it kinda drags. To me, this is the counterpoint brush of the smeary round or opaque round. It does smear like those, but not as much. It also tends to deposit more paint in a more "drybrush" manner --which I find pleasing because it can be layered. Play around with the opacity. Sample often from surrounding colors and scrub away!
The Funky brush is for small details only. It's way to slow for anything larger than 10 pixels or so. It's similar to the Big Funk, but has more paint deposit and tighter bristles.
The palette knife was my attempt to create a feather brush --named for the tool in one of the older versions of Painter that acted the same way. There is a palette knife in 6.0, but it's waaaay different. The brush isn't working too good right now, but I included because you might find it useful. I'm still in the process of tweaking it.
Enjoy!
-Pat

No, I didn't get it. Good thing you double-checked. My ISP (Roadrunner) has been installing a new mail server, so some of my mail has bounced in the past few days. Could you please send it again? Thanks!

Thanks for those brushes, Pat.
I know I'm going to learn a lot from them.

I'll post the settings in this topic as soon as I can transcribe them out of Painter. Basically, all the brushes are just camel hair varients, so you can recreate them in any version of Painter above 6.0.
Immi - Got the message. Deadlines were bad the past few days... and are going to be bad all this week. I've made some headway though, which is in my return email! Apologies for the delay!
