This would be my first attempt at coloring. I'm probably getting ahead of myself since my drawings still look like I'm a 12 year old. I took this image from a Starcraft fan art website (it's a dark templar) and tried playing around with the coloring. The back cloak is just kind of how I perceived it.

Thanks in advance for any advice..

Looks great, but if i had to nit-pick, I'd want to see more of that scaley/leathery/whatever texture the sketch originally had on its head. good work man!

i think u lost some of the feel of the original pencil sketch by erasing some of the lines or smudging them... if u just copied the sketch onto a new layer then painted underneath it u could keep all the nice linework and still color it nicely

also, in the color version u could make the lighting a bit more dramatic with a strong light source and the eye could sort of cast a slight glow on the surrounding skin... and be less bright yellow... i seem to remember dark templars having orangey eyes? i play starcraft too much, hehehe.

good job tho, i think its a great start, and thats a kickass pencil drawing, whoever did it.

Hey there DE,

Have you studied values and light and shadow yet? I know your just starting out, but there cant be enough emphasis on light, shadow, and value when it comes to coloring. Sometimes the best way to do that, is to work without color first. Get yourself a nice soft pencil (3b perhaps), a ton of paper, a light and an egg (yes, an egg). Put the egg on a white surface, and place the light in different areas around the egg, drawing exactly what you see, including tone and value.. by value I mean the varying degrees of darkness away from white. I dont know if I'm making much sense to you yet, but it's mostly something you have to try to do in order to understand it.

Mine's not so great.. the values are far to dark, but thats also because of the scanner. Note the absence of line in this pic. I only drew the darker spots of the egg, giving it a 3-dimensional feel.

Other things to try this with are boxes, cones, cylanders, and pyramids.

Also, study a bit about color theory. I know color seems simple at first, but to use it right you have to understand how color works. A really good website I know of, is http://www.wetcanvas.com/ArtSchool/Color/ColorTheory/

Hope this guides you a bit.. keep working at it! Your showing great signs of progress. Msg me on icq sometime if you want more help on this or anything else.. I lost your uin after I murdered windows.

Originally I had a little more detail on the top of the head, but I wanted to attempt to make it seem a little more lifelike.

As for the eyes, I couldn't remember any colors of the DT (and I still play starcraft, I just happen to be a zerg player ) and I colored this at work so I didn't really want to load BW and check.

Here's a progress shot about halfway through the picture, should I try to get these lines back in the forehead?

Thanks again everyone!

Zerg? I hate the Zerg. Terran rule!!!

Anyway,
Definately, preserve the lineart. The lines on the forehead, are working better. I'd also suggest you pick your lineart better. Something with so much pencil shading and grain too it, interferes with your coloring. If you are going to under paint, then a good clean lineart is a must.

As for the coloring itself. Give contrast to the image. Add highlights to create depth.
