I hope no one minds if I post photos instead of digital art Anyhoo, I've been doing a short photography assignment recently, where I had to choose a manmade object and create abstract photos and compositions. This is what I produced :

critiques welcome.

Wooh, these are nice. But how come I've never seen them around the place? Which part of Vancouver are you?!!!

I love the mood in the night shots. Good blurry background.

For some odd reason, every time I look at these images, I have a strange overwhelming urge to go to the bathroom.

thanks for all the replies, guys. Always nice to know this kind of work is not overlooked. All these fire hydrants are from downtown Vancouver... the shot from above I got from leaning over the railing of a openair parkade and looking down. Got chased out by security guards for that and Daz199 : I only have one thing to say... you live in Surrey. 'nuff said :P j/k There are some crazy hydrants in the older parts of Vancouver... for example, near the main library. It's fat, and blue, and has bloody CHAINS on it. That's just odd.

Wow!! What a treat! The second one down is just brilliant... it would make a GREAT poster.

I love the high-up photo because your first thought is, "Whoa, how'd he do that?"

I picture some college-kid-goon up tangled in the telephone wires when I see that pic. hehe

MGC : very nearly. I'm not the most ... COUGH... coordinated... of people, adn focusing a very expnesive borrowed manual camera while holding onto a railing and leaning over very nearly taxed me....

God...it just makes me choke up seeing my beloved fire hydrants portrayed so nicely. sniff. l luv em. luv em dearly.

Seriously, cool stuff, especially considering a fire hydrant is a pretty boring subject. I think pic 2 is my favourite, although i find the top and bottom vertical lines distracting.

Hey amazing photographs. I love the composition of it. Looks rad.

Just had a couple of questions. How did you get the correct exposures for the night shots? I try to do some night photography, but I can't seem to get the exposures out right. How do you know how long to keep the shutter open for? Thanks

b

[edit] By the way, did you use any filters or anything like that? [edit]

correct exposure? lol, I borrowed the camera from a photographer friend of mine, and used whatever he set it to last shutter speed was at 60 I believe. I guess I was just incredibly lucky. I mostly messed with the focus to get the right atmosphere. I waited until it had recently rained, and it helped that it was kinda gloomy; the neon lights reflected off everything, and stood out even more.

I used no filters on these photos; I simply scanned the original shots in and arranged them in Photoshop to match the real compositions I handed in. On the night shot, I made a duplicate of the photos to go on top, set on overlay and toned down to like 20%. The scan just didn't have the same glossy shine to the lights as in the orig. photo... and really, that makes the photo.

so yeah. I'm off to school now. Dammit, I gotta stop surfing this forum b4 school... it's too damn addictive

absolutely beautiful work.

technically, these are photomanipulations.

so now, we have proof positive that photomanips can and should be considered art.

thank you very much.

and if any of these were postcards, i'd sure as hell buy them.

once again, great work.

he took the photos himself so I guess that was the biggest part of the creative process here.. so technically those are photos I'd say (he did not manipulate them that much)

uhm.. and how can a technique (like drawing/photomanip/..) be considered "art" in itself- isnt it always the individuum that makes it art?

.. sorry all pretty random musings
