Well, to add to the pile of colored Joe Mad! work around here, here's a coloring I did of his sequentials for Battle Chasers. It was borrowed from www.joemadureira.com. My last topic sparked a huge spooge demon/Liquid! comic controversy, hopefully I'll get crits on this post ;D And Liquid!, I have been taking your advice. I have been drawing, painting, and studying light sources and stuff, then going back and messing with this comic thing. I think the combination of these really helps my artwork. Diversity is helping my productiveness. Enough rambling, here's the pic...

I definitly get a postive reaction from your light-sourcing practice. You are really close to a professional comic book-coloring person's level (just my average measurement, not an official designation :P)
Capn's right, your brush strokes are way too visible. I can pick out the sizes you used for the orange "shock" background in the bottom frame and I can see streaks in the third frame.
Just take a look at Joe's black "evil crackle" border he has on the left side of the bottom frame... you need to color using "style", in the same spirit that Joe drew that edge.
This is difficult to explain because it's beyond my casual ability. But to sum it up in a sentence...
Add a bit of volume and detail to your backgrounds.
...something much more interesting than a standard photoshop gradient, but still subtle enough to be a background (ugh, can I be any more enigmatic :P)
Heck, you can work off of a photshop gradient... just do something cool to it. Experimente!

I like the fact that you can see the brushstrokes Everything is getting to "airbrushy" these days.
But maybe that's just me.. |
