heya all - kind of a simple first attemp at some graphic design- didnt turn out great yet but...any ideas/ thoughts? cheers

Interesting, indeed...
First thing though, would be cleaning it up. I think its because your original background picture was a very low quality, but you might just have saved it like that, but I would go for better picture quality. |

yeh the pic was of low quality- but i saved it pretty low too
i wanted a kinda 'blur effect' |

If you wanted it blurred, you should just have used the Gausian Blur there is (I'm guessing your using Photoshop). The low quaility style usually dont work out that great. |
