I started this pic recently to practice making water look as realistic as I could get. It's supposed to be a water elemental type thing but so far, i'm not too pleased with it. The water just doesn't look good... does anybody have any suggestions that might make it look a bit more realistic?

it might need more highlight and shades, and splashes. http://www.gorblimey.com/tutorials/4.html this tutorial by Socar Myles features drawing water too... It should be helpful (was for me at least). Then just... Practice. |

i like whats goin on where his arms meet his shoulders, how the water is splashing up there as they come together. its cool because i wouldve made the arms growing from his shoulders, but youve got them coming up from the water to meet the shoulders. thats much more interesting.
i don't know what to say about getting realistic water, but maybe try modelling the waves and crashes a little more? in the ocean waves look like little mountains, carved that way, you know? maybe try thinking that way as you scult them. also, the stuff i said about the shoulder area, i actually don't like the erased lines that come on top of the image.. i would go back over those sections and "add" the spash, not "subtract".
hmm.. hope this babble was remotely helpful

First off it's posture seems stiff. Try curving it a bit. For the water effect, you can try a bit of smearing and blending. Definitely, put in more sprinkles of highlight. Try using a coarse air brush for the sea spray. Try overlaying with some other color than pure white, like some yellow or red. And also try bringing a very light touch of color back into the sky. Lastly let some light pass through the elemental. If it's really made of water, I should be able to see through the thing. All in all, a good start. post your updates, I wanna see where this piece goes. |
