julez, check out Don Seegmiller's tutorial on blending, available here:

Steven, your 3D art is always incredible, as are your paintings. You and Balistic are both incredible that way. This is a great painting. You've captured the mood perfectly. In other words, no crits here

Thanks OpenCL, Ben!

Julez, thanks, it's kind of accidental, I got the nice texture without thinking too much about it, when I scanned the sketch - a nice light grey grain all over. Then I simply painted with pressure-sensitive opaqueness, I guess the trick is to use tones that aren't too dark, but just slightly darker than the tone you want in any particular place (at first)... I suppose that's a bit like using gray watercolor, or markers. If the color is too light you have to press hard, going all opaque, and you loose all grain and strokes; if it's too dark it gets very difficult to control.

After the tones start to get where I want them, I go over some areas with a more opaque setting.

Spectra, thanks, you're right, except that edge is supposed to be narrowing gradually at the bottom, I guess that's not very clear, sorry. What could I do to clarify it? Maybe show a similar edge on the other side of the hallway? Or maybe make it not so gradual... or narrow it to zero?
