I don't know if this might help a bit or not. Sometimes a million people can tell you the same thing but one says it in just the right way that it clicks.
Anyway...
Don't worry about blending at this point. You've got a lot of streaky highlights and shading. Try to think about the face as a set of planes and use broad strokes to sculpt the light and dark areas of it.
Someone on this forum said something to the effect that you can look at the face like a low polygon 3D model. For me, that was what clicked.
Here is an example. It's not good, but perhaps it gets across what I am trying to say.
