I also started my life as a box, but alas, I do not look so cool. That's some |337 $h\7 if I may say so myself. Can't wait to see it textured. |

Thanks for the comments!
I am using MAX 4 with Sub Division modeling, and this will be textured. Actually, I am doing a whole Orc body with armor and all that, and plan to animate it as well. A few morf targets are planned as well.

dr. bang, Subdivision modelling is the same as box modelling. They are just different terms used by different people but they all refer to basically the same thing. You make a low resolution control mesh then apply a subdivision algorithm (usually the Catmull-Clark (but some programs have others) algorithm (or some variation of it)), and a higher detailed, smoother version is the result.
Other names which the method goes by are Subdivision Surfaces (Lightwave, XSI and Maya call it this), Meshsmooth (3d Studio MAX calls it this), MetaNurbs (Old versions of LW called it this), HyperNurbs (Cinema 4DXL calls it this), MetaForm (Old versions of Lightwave called it this) and UberNurbs (Electric Image Universe calls it this). |

Meaty Cheese you explained it perfectly.
This started life as a box in MAX with MeshSmooth applied, and lots of cutting, cleaning, shaping, etc.
I updated the pic with gums, teeth and a lightsource with shadows.

Nice model.
The only thing which bothers me is that it looks like you have tried for a fairly anatomical approach to the structure of the head, yet the bulges and muscle definitions aren't all that convincing as they aren't in the correct places. I know an Orc is a fantasy creature, but as you've chosen to follow quite a human (or rather ape) interpretation of the subject matter I think this is a valid critisism. A lot of the creases and details are untidy too, and some of it looks almost accidental.
The basic form of the head is superb though, and it has a lot of character.

Jock: Thanks for the comments....I have taken some liberties with this guy since he's an orc, and I tried to make it visually interesting as much as anything else. Yep, he is definitely inspired somewhat by gorillas, even tho he is an Orc.
Munky: There is most definitely a seam, that is because I am modeling only half the head right now, the other half is an instance and there is a tiny gap between the two. Eventually I will weld the two halves together and make it asymmetrical, and then add touches like warts or whatever before texturing. Thanks for the comment!

As always Nukelon's work never seases to amaze me. Very nice indeed! Will be very cool with a fully modelled body with colthes & armor to go with this head as you said. I'm eager to see the textured face!
I say we nuke em', nuke em all! |

Man, excellent looking mesh so far.
Any chance I can see a wire frame render of it?
Thanks.
Can't wait to see it textured.

Halogenic: Hey thanks! Yep I will posting as I make significant progress.
Avaj: Thanks for the comments...he probably will have to be green, since that is part of being an Orc, but he won't be *only* green but a blend of different colors with green as the overall effect.
BG: Thanks man, your painting is looking really good too.
Vgta: Hey there, it was fun trying out Net Painter...thanks for the comments...yeah learn Painter it rocks!
Melted Petal: Zug ZUg! Hehe yeah me too..or how bout a pig to eat? I'm going for that Warcraft look as well. Stylized Orc..trying to make it look like my Orc drawings.
Take care,

In my world orchs are not green I think that in Tolkiens books they are more like black, brown, gray .. and thats my own image of them. But I guess I am pretty alone thinking that, hehe.
Keep up the good work. |
