I started painting from a photo of my lil brother when he was 8 years old. will continue tomorrow, just would like to check whether anyone has anything to critique at this stage, proportions or composition, I dunno... havent done the eyes yet, prolly the hardest part I guess.

anyways, I would as always, appreciate your thoughts...

thanks.

Looks good. What Mike is saying is ... wrong and right at the same time I guess. Structurally, everything looks great, excapet maybe the ear on the right needs a little work. There could be a bit more dark areas, but I imagine your using a reference photo and many photo studios tend to get softer colors in order to get a more pleasant appearance. In some other extreme cases, they do the compelte opposite.

But, in my opinion, it's progressing really well and completely up to you if you want to add darker colors. try not to just look at the photo, pick up a color in an area and paint it on the comp because the color matches. Try to understand where the indentations, and shadows are. This will allow and give you more flexibility.

But, back to the picture, just keep it going... If the picture shown up there is the original size your painting at.. it may be your benifit to paint at 2x the size of that and shrink it down at the end before its too late. Great work and keep it up!

mike, eviltoylet, thanks for your input!

yes it might be a little pale right now, the photo is as suggested rather soft, a typical school photo. but I will as you suggested, put in some more dark areas that also hopefully will make the shapes stronger. Im actually working on this in 2000x2500 so its resized pretty much already

anyways, really appreciate it, thanks a ton.

Hello Dan.

I can see it's your brother...so that's good. Actually I think this will be really good. You are very good with colors.

Work on everything at the same time. The fact that the eyes are gone distracts too much since it'll be the focus in the whole portrait. You'll also have a clearer idea of the finished pic.
