This is the first real sketchy thing I've done in painter since I got my wacom (three days ago), and I'm wondering what's wrong with her face... I think it's the eyes but I dunno what it is... feels crooked some how...
yes, I did just make one eye and duplicate it, I just couldn't draw the left eye from this angle (my arm got all odd)
All help + crit is highly apreciated

I'm not sure what kind of a look you're after, but if it's a fairly realistic one then a good start would be studying the anatomy of the skull first. The proportions of the top and bottom halves are off. Either bring in the eyes, temples and such, leave the cheekbones where they are and/or square off and elongate her jaw more. But definitely (ImO) fill out and round up her lips more if you're after a more feminine look...

Thanks alot for the comments guys, have to find a decent skull anatomy tutorial somewhere... fred made one but I haven't recieved the pics for it yet...
Anyways, I think I made the lips a bit bigger and stuff on the www.hippytrippy.net/im/woman2.jpg pic... she looks off tho... that little whatchamacallit between the nose and mouth is too far to the right... and the eyes are too far apart aren't they? =)

Something I learned in school:
More often then not, when you use "symbols" to represent things (IE generalizations of an eye-drawing it as an oval/oblong shape, making things too symmetrical, lips that have been drawn around the outline of the lips ,(the line that seperates the color of the lips and the color of the skin) your face often looks "odd", because everything is designed with symbols, or representations of the real thing. Doing some life studies will help you remedy this problem, spend time studying the form and shapes of things, and drawing them exactly, instead of looking at somethign and going, oh, there's an eye, so I'll draw an oval here. (the duplication of one eye and making it the other, is a prime example of symbol creation)

Good advice from Fontainne.
I'll just add that it looks like you're working too detailed to start with. It's often better to work from general to specific. In other words, start by roughly blocking where everything goes with rectangles and ovals and such. That way you can easily change your piece if you notice that something is out of place or the wrong size or misaligned. It also keeps you from being too precious about your work. By working generally you can think more about underlying structure - you can block in things like muscles and bones, but drop them out as you flesh in the details. |
