I think the good thing with macs lies in their roots.
You still see that thing Steven Jobs Siad somewhere in 1984 "Computers are made for man, not man for the computers". Thats a rule most PCs didnt follow for a long long time. They are getting closer to the mac, and some maybee even faster, but I think most Mac users (me too) still like the spirit and the "difference" and the war, wich was apple against IBM in 1984, and now Its just another opponent.
Apple is always giv the direction, The others are just following. Just look at the whole "i" -stuff, the designs of Computers since 1998...
I have to use both, but Ill keep my mac

About damn time.

I don't get this attitude. Didn't you already feel confident that your computer platform of choice was the best for you before this little benchmark test came out?

I use both Mac and PC. I enjoy my Mac a great deal, but I don't hate my PC. I don't see what the big deal is. Use the computer platform you prefer. If you like it better, can troubleshoot it better, get enough software on it to suit your needs, then what's it to anyone else? Why this big platform pissing contest?

And, roundeye, could you quit with the cutesey "gay" references? They're old. They're trollish. I have a gay friend too, and he uses a PC. He doesn't like Macs. So big whoop-de-doo.

sigh

PCs are nothing like Macs, nor do they want to be and vice versa, and PCs are faster...and cost less...

Right. Sure they are. I guess that would explain Apple's tiny share of the overall PC market. When they learn to compete on a level consistent with the collective market, then they might actually be in a position to lead. As it stands, they do not.

the designs of Computers since 1998...

Yeah - Xerox's designs that Apple ripped off - Steve Jobs literally walking out of the Xerox labs with hardware in hand. Stupid Xerox people...naive bunch.

Oh yeah...let's not forget Apple revolutionizing design with "i" this and translucent designs. Apple ripped translucent design from the toys of the 70s - remember the Micronauts??

People will always be taking something from somewhere else and expanding and captilizing on it in some way. It's the nature of the free market environment.

id like to know why this great test of pc vs mac is done with a pentium 4 when althon cpus are faster, this is not a fair test by any means but it hasnt even used the best pc's cpu, and did they have the same amount of ram etc?

but who cares about the unfair test, pc's are better than macs, hence more people have pcs, the only people who like macs are people with macs.

And dogshit is good food. A million flies can't be wrong.

Since when has popularity been proof of anything much? I can name quite a few popular things that are utter crapincluding dog crap, which, as you already know, is quite the rage among your common house fly.

If you love your PC, that's great. I assume that's why you bought it. But don't assume that people who chose a competing product are dumber or somehow deluded. They had reasons for making their choice, just like you had reasons. What's the big deal?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again; "more people have pcs", because they are a better buy in a free market society - not necessarily because they're better. Apple does produce a good product, but Apple just has a different pricing structure, and it isn't competitive. There are no real performance characteristics that put one over the other; they're both valid platforms and easily applicable to preference. The only major difference is cost.

Let's be realistic; there is no marketing campaign on the face of the earth that will convince any hard working person to buy an 800 mhz mac for $1500 when they get a PIV 1.7+ mhz pc for the same price. None. The average consumer, which by the way encompasses the market as a whole, will always try to maximize their return on their expenditure.

Mmmmmm...pie

I have a question: Who cares?

I mean, really... this age old debate has been going on forever. But from the perspective of the digital artist, we're all just pushing pixels on a .psd or whatever. Both platforms do it well, so who really cares which one does it better? Just go with whatever you want and be happy with it. Everyone feels this need to push their platform preference on others. It's silly really.

i've been using a Mac since they first came out 84, and owned a PC since 96 b4 then i used a PC now and then and thought to myself god Windows is the biggest bag of shite, the Dell 486SX i used fell over 8-12 times a day and i wanted to throw it out the window (no pun intended ), there was a job that i was doing and i needed to export it to an eps from Freehand (the PC had 8Mb of RAM, Win 3.11) the file was 48k would it do it? NO so i had to take it home and export it on my quadra and bring it back in2 work and use it..

but since then Hardware has improved and OS's have evolved, the only thing that held a Mac above the PC was the typeface support was so well executed.. but now that has changed because Suitcase is now available for the PC.. i recently went freelance and had the choice of either spending 800 pounds on a 700Mhz referb'd G4 or buying a Dual PIII 1.1Ghz PC, i took the 1Gig option because it gave me much more power in all the apps i wanted to use i have 2Gb of RAM and 40Gb more storage than the G4 offered, i also have a CDR and DVD as seperate drives, something that the G4 can't offer without me going for a Firewire device..

i believe that while the PC is evolving by offering greater expandability, the Mac is going to become extinct in a few years unless Apple starts making a box that is more expandible, christ they don't even offer a GF4Ti4600 only a GF4MX..

but at the end of the day a G4 sitting on every desk of a Design Studio does look better than a cream coloured box :/

PS: m8 of mine did buy a G4 733 and is happy with it, but i was doing som photoshop on it the other day and was thinking god this is slow..

I just wanted to point out one or two facts.

1) The reason why traditionally graphic artists prefer Macs over PCs: Macs have built in gamma correction, in the past PCs did not. This means when your work went to print if you worked on a Mac the colors would print true to life. If you worked on a PC they would not. It's that simple This is starting to change, but it does explain why in the past graphic artists all worked on Macs.

2)The reason that Macs are more expensive then PCs: You'll have needed to take some basic economics courses to get the gist of this because I'm not going to explain it in depth ^^; Of economic necessity things that people don't buy as much of are more expensive even if the raw materials cost the same. The reason why is that the company cannot justify the labor and over head expenses if they don't sell each unit for more to cover their fixed prices. It's not because the guys over at apple just sat down one days and picked some expensive prices out of their heads. The price is determined by the market. I promise you that if the numbers of mac to pc users were switched the prices would also have switched with macs being less expensive.

Personally I use both and have no problem with either. I like the interface, true-multi tasking capabilities and stability of OSX, but I also like having the choice of programs that WinXP offers.

Fact: Pc's are better than Macs.

Fact: Apple is only in business because Microsoft gave them a nice loan - so Microsoft could have some form of competition and broaden it's software into the Apple market.

End of story.

I should also point out that PC's have a larger share of the software market, a LOT larger. In the end the software is all that really matters.

Sorry Apple users, bend down a suck on my Pentium's 8' transistor.

ok way way back in 84, Apple Release the Mac 128k, this was a revolutionary design for a computer, it had a GUI (Graphic User Interface) all be it on a 9" monocrome display, which you controlled using a Mouse.. this saved you having to type in all those commands for stuff to happen using a keyboard..

then came the Mac 512 (same design but more ram) (all the macs back then came with a SCSI interface (small computer systems interface) which allowed all manner of things to be added to expand the machine..

then in 89 Bill decided to launch Windows to counter Apples box (which by then had evolved into the Mac IIci cx etc, which was like desktop box for the PC it had expandiblity built in so you could have 2 x motorised 1.44mb floppy drives, HDD etc (all HDD were SCSI giving maximum performace) colour displya capable of 256-16.7 million colours (thats 8bit - 24bit colour) this machine was the dogs bollox, i remember many a happy hour sat at once of these drawing to my hearts content with the mouse

the thing that Apple had over the PC for design and other expandiblity was that it could have so many other perifferals connected to it, and if you wanted to do with with a PC you had to Add controller cards etc to get anywhere near it.. oh i for got to mention that the 128 Mac also had built in 8bit sound, as did all the Macs until the sound chips got better and better, so did the upgrades to the Mac's

then in 93 was it? the first PowerPC was launched this was a revolutionary step in the way of the Desktop PC (until then only Super computers had RISC chipsets) then in 97 (don't quote me) Steve Jobs came back in2 power and turned Apples slump in Mac sales around the G3 was launched Steve decided to do away with SCSI as the major interface for the Mac and wend USB (8Mb/sec), Firewire (40Mb/sec, and went with IDE/33/66 interface, which brought the cost of the Mac Box down to an affordable level these boxes were the King of the Design world, fast expandible and didn't cost the earth (back then the Pentium was king of the hill in PC terms Pentium Pro 200 was the fastest CPU you could buy) then Intel started making faster and faster CPU's sommat that the Apple properganda machine said wasn't possible..

to sum it all up basically if you've been a fan of a Mac for years you gonna find it hard to believe that the Mac is slower than the PC because of all the RISC/CISC bull that you've been fed with all these years but the truth is that even ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) are moving from those SUPER SGI machines to AMD and Intel..

Mac users were expecting the G5 CPU last Jan and it didn't happen, instead Apple brought out a new range of G4's inc. the Dual 1Gig! every1 thought that this was the Inet/AMD killer but nope.. its not going to happen anytime soon, cos Intel have broken the 3Ghz barrier and i can't see Apple competing with that anymore

everyone also goes on about the ease of use of Mac OS, this was true, but Micro$haft have in my opinion caught up with this..

MAC OS X.2 is a beast sure, but its also harder to understand than the older OS..

if you don't have a Mac i wouldn't spend the money on one uless you want a pretty little box sat on ur Desktop.

there are the same Design Apps on the PC as there are on the Mac, so they're all compatible with each other, so if someone says that you can't use the file because its come off of a Mac and you need to buy a Mac to read it, they're talking out their backside

i have no trouble using either platform but i have to say that after 4 years apple has met its match, you can buy the parts for a 2.4Ghz P4 for less than a top of the range Mac and i think thats what matters now.. More Power for less money, and its only going to get cheaper

/rant off
