I stumbled upon all this digi-art by accident. But the more I looked at peoples art done with this style, the more the urge to try it has consumed me. I am a fan of pencil art, and have drawn with pencils since I can remember. So having a background in art is probably a must along with other skills i'm not aware of. So my question is; what steps should I take in order to begin, are there any tools I might need (besides the obvious computer, PShop6 or 7), and are their any good tutorials to help?
I would appreciate any help. |

My suggetion is, dont use the tutorials. just go to the finished art forums and look at all the digital art there. try to figure out how they did those effects yourself, teach your self how to use the programs. mess around with all the diffrent tools and such, this will give you a better understanding for the programs then a tutorial ever would. and in time you will develope your own unique style.
hope this helps you on your path |

i disagree with the funk master. read tutorials, as many as you can, so you have a good basic understanding of the software and hardware you are using. once you have got that, you can just use what you have learned to develop your own style. try and be specific. dont look for tutorials that say draw like so and so, search for something that actually tells you what the specific tools do and gives a practical example. of coure stick around here and absorb all the knowledge you can. tutorials are good, i couldnt have learned photoshop without them, but they are not gonna make you a master painter. theyre just there to guide you. |

Thanks for the replies. I have a general understanding of PhotoShop and GIMP, so it might not be to long before I can start posting art ! Once again, thanks, and more replies would be great.

I'd be interested in seeing some of your pencil drawings... I'm on vacation now for the first time in years without a computer in tow that I can use to draw with. Instead I decided to just bring a small laptop for email... and a bunch of pencils and sketchpads... It's quite difficult getting back to working with pencils after having not for about 10 years.
My advice for the migration to computer drawing is to play with it... experiment... and keep in mind that it is quite a different medium. Just the fact that you can draw as easily while erasing as you can while drawing... That's quite a profound ability and can lead to some interesting techniques. |

Gnome...
You may want to check out Suma's link archive too. It's got tons of useful links all in one place, instead of combing through the net.

Most of my drawings are way too big for any scanner I have, but if I can get some pictures of a few Ill try and post them.
I haven't seen anything like I draw on here, which are mostly Native American portraits and stuff of that nature.
I have herd talk on here about a pin for your computer. Could someone explain this for me?
