I remember a couple years back when they anounced a doom movie and Todd was doing the designs for it...
The date for the movie's release was around 2003 2005 ish.
After that, it just dispapeared. Sometime later Doom 3 was anounced.
Now that D3 is coming out, I bet that movie will see the light of day...
Which is why I've been wondering why all the concept art for Doom 3 reminds me of his style, specialy the imps head seen here in the top right corner of sketches:
http://3dactionplanet.com/doom/images/image.asp?e3/video/18.jpg
I was thinking that maybe these two projects are some how linked or thier using some of thier ideas they had for the movie. I just hope big nasty monsters with slongs hanging out doesn't make it into the game, unless they want to make it THAT scary
What do you think? |

Im not sure about the Doom movie but that art that you have Linked is done by Kenneth Scott of ID software , not Todd M. I can see where you would get that though !
Kenneth Scott did all the textures for Quake 3 , and he is probebly one of the best concept artists in the world , and certainly the best texture artist I have ever seen by far that is why all of his drawn works looks so well colored !! |

Looks like he has some Bizley influence in his work. He is a great texture artist. Wish those id art guys would come out of their cage more often and do some interviews. I imagine they are very, very busy though.

Yes, Kenneth Scott is really underrated. He can pull this stuff off without a problem I think, but, because he's stuck doing his own little thing under a company structure, his name doesn't nearly get as much coverage as Todd who's put himself in the spotlight. It is however possible that Ken is influenced by it. |

theres no connection between the movie and Doom3,, or McFarlane for that matter.
its all Ken, Adrian, and Seneca.
Ken is handeling almost all of the character design though.
I dont believe McFarlane is one of his major influences, but i do believe that they both are influenced by similar artists and art styles. for instance, they both seem to have elements of Frazetta mixed with a little Manga. i do know that ken is an obsessive jap-anime collector.
i like Kens art better than Todds personally.
i was up at there office a couple of weeks ago and they played the E3 demo for me in there super pimped out media room.. oh my gawd!!! i seriously flinched and tried to dodge a fireball from an Imp,, sitting in my chair! doom3 is the best looking game i have ever seen. scary and atmospheric as all hell..

How do you know those guys ? Working with American McGee ???

Ken looks at alot of stuff. Corben, Terada, Nirasawa, Shirow, and he probably looks at stuff like Phil Hale, Jeffrey Jones and the Capcom designers as well. |

as if mcfarlane has drawn/designed anything of worth for ages. why do people hold onto this idea that he is in any way creative just 'cos he has his name plastered all over the place? what has he done? seriously. besides taking credit for other peoples work.
I would be very supprised if he could design anything of that level you see in doom.
[sorry about that] |

I agree with Rinaldo.
Todd's cover for Spawn 100 was laughable, in my opinion. His work back on Spider-Man was really good (at least, to me), I think his art really started to lose enthusiasm around issue 14 of Spawn.
I'd mention Greg Capullo, but I can't seem to say anything good about the man. :P |

I agree, Todd has never been extremely creative, he just knows how market stuff...
spider-man +ghost rider + the punisher + batman= spawn = boring
Remember when had some top secret new design for spawn and all it turned out to be was more fricken spikes and chains... |

The Magic Pen: hehe Oh man,, just about everybody in the Dallas Game comunity has met at some point in time or hangs out on a regular basis. its very incestuous. but hey,, this is Texas after all.
just about every 3rd party developer out here origionally sprang from Apogee and Id. thats how all of the older guys know eachother..
Im really good friends with Seneca. thats who i was visiting at Id when i saw the demo.
he has a StreetFighter3 arcade machine in the office and he invites us up there to play ocasionally.
yah,, its too bad Ken doesnt interact in the comunity any more, but he deffinately has his hands full up there, and ive heard that he works A LOT. like more than hes expected to... but his art rips, so there you go.
MadSamoan: I noticed on your web page that you worked at Ion on DK. i may have met you before. This is Zach Hall btw. i always remember faces but never names. I shared a house with with Squirrel Eiserloh, Josh Martel, Lee Dotson and Tom Mustaine back when Ion Dallas was still around. i knew just about everyone on the Anox team but i only knew a few guys really well on the DK team.
hmmmmm,, i wonder.... |

When we started the Austin Ion Storm office, I transferred down immediately partly because I recognized the problems that were to plague the Dallas office very, very, early on, and I wanted to work with Warren Spector and other old friends from my Origin days on what eventually became Deus Ex.
Ken and Seneca deserve whatever success they get. God knows they've sacrificed alot to be where they are. |

How old is Ken? Did he goto art college or did he just have the talent and determination to keep at it himself?
I'm 23 and just now starting college. Gona go for a Major in Illustration and hopefully land a job at id/Blizzard/Epic/Some Game Company doing concept work/textures/modeling. So, I'll prolly be 27 by the time I get a job in the industry, as it seems now. |

Hey Lono, where do you work to be able to sit in their office?
As far as his creativity is concerned, I think you should thank his staff, and simply appreciate his label. Got to give him credit though. His label has the most detailed stuff I've ever seen.
lets all try and forget KISS: Psycho Circus though huh?

jHof: im an artist,, and ive never had an employer ask me about my education once. I never went to college. if you want to be an artist in the game industry, all you need is a rockin portfolio and a little experience in games. best way to go about this is get involved in developing mods. find some geeks on the net who want to start a project, or start one yourself. do something impressive that people will see and possably remember and your in the door. dont expect to be paied for your work for quite some time though.
if your going to college to hone your art skills and aquire a deeper understanding of art, DO IT because it will pay off.. but if your just going for the piece of paper and you feel pretty confident about your current abilitys, dont waste your time.
you may have to give your art away at first, but get some experience developing games and learning how to flourish within the boundaries and limitations of technology.
this is what game companies care about.
Siyaan: ive worked at Ritual and Rogue,, and
ive done a lot of contract jobs for other companies. im currently doing a contract job for 3D Realms on Duke Nukem Forever.
its no big deal though,, as i said above, i was at the office visiting a friend.
MadSamoan: I have nothing but respect for Warren Spector. Im really glad that there are people like him still in the industry keeping Quality in games. its starting to look really scary for third party developers these days. Cant make the fun games with the origional ideas and the origional property, because the publishers dont want to take the risk with there money. they would much rather just keep recycling the same crap that they know will sell. like every time some hyped up action movie comes out some buttplug publisher will buy up the IP and push the project on some poor developer who has a large team that needs paychecks.
then the publisher will most likely give them some insainly short developement period with monthly milestones. in the end,, after the publisher has repeatedly taken a dump all over the project, they will have the nerve to ask why it smells funny.
You guys are golden though. youve got Deus Ex under your belt, and it did great. and its your property. you get to write your own ticket.... luckey Ducks..

Thought this might be interesting;
http://www.loonygames.com/content/1.32/
It's an interview I did for Loonygames.com with Ken Scott a couple of years back, just after he had joined id Software.
He is easily the most influential artist in the 3D gaming scene at the moment. Everywhere you look someone is trying to do his style. |

What about Adrian (The other TeH Carmack)
King Lono - Cool man, thanks for the tips/info. I'm definately going to art school for my own self gain and not for the paper (That is a nice thing to have, but I'm more concerned about furthering my skills.).
I'll be learning modeling on the side. Though, I look at those scenes in WC3 and I'm sitting there with my tutorial on making a ball bounce over a fence
