ever since I had to access the internet with this stupid I-mac, I haven't been able to use the search and back buttons on Sijun, otherwise I would have done this myself.
But I am sure there must be a thread or two in the past where people discussed what resolutions they like to work at. So if someone could possible post a link for me I would be eternally greatful.
Thanks

Probably a good posting rez is 600 pixels for the widest whether height or width and let the other fall where it may.
But a working rez is quite a different matter and really depends on the intended purpose - print, computer game, website, whichever. Whatever the working rez, knock it down to around 600 pixels for displaying on the web... |

my working resolution is around 2000-3000 pixels in both directions usually. Might be something like 1500x1500 at the minimum. I don't care about the dpi since you can always change it later. only if you're going to make prints of the work, then you'd better put the size in pixels to big, but resolution is still changeable later
As for displaying on the web, I usually have 800 pixels at max set to width/height... usually it's somewhere between 400-600, though. |

egerie The answers I'm getting above are pretty much what I'm looking for. Though I am more interested in the "working rez" then I am the output rez.
eyewoo I may be wrong but didn't you state somewhere that you worked at something like 5000 pixels?
Thanks guys for your informative replies. I'm just trying to get an idea of what an average "working rez" might be.
But the info about web output size being around 600 was an unexpected jewl. Thanks |

Yepsir... generally 4000 x 5500 pixels or thereabouts... My 2 gig of RAM help. I wouldn't try that size in Photoshop without that much RAM...
At that size I can have Iris or Epson prints up to 48" made and still have good quality. I don't often do that, but I could... |

Actually I'm working on a painting right now at 4000 and I have a half gig of DDR ram overclocked to a gig. The only lag time I have is when I open and save.
But man! 2 gigs sounds like heaven! |

Overclocking would mean more speed...
you need more chips to increase the size
In response to the question: I use pretty low res ( 1500 - 2000 pixels) on account of RAM, but I'd certainly prefer 5000+ even if it's not for print. Some of the techniques I use work better with antialising turned off, and such a high res would reduce the artifacts.
Fortunately I'm not really trying to create finished pieces at this point. |

I always like to work on the highest resolution that is workable on my system. That way, I don't have to rework it if I will need it for big prints. Except for harddisk space, there is no good reason not to work as big as efficiently possible. I propose you let your system resources set your standard.
Happy hunting from Scotland, |

waldo Thanks for the link. That was just what I was looking for.
vhy I'm sorry, but I don't know quite what you mean by "you need more chips to increase size." Surely you don't mean document size, because I can make it as big as Photoshop will let me. Could you please explain |

think what he's saying, BP, is that you can't really overclock a half-gig of ram to a gig of ram. you want more ram, you need s'more chips. if you want the ram you DO have to run a l'i'l faster, tho, then overclocking might be worth a shot

Overclock increase the speed, not the space.
Man, lookin all the space you've got on your comp makes me drool
my playground is around 1500x2000 res
on a cely466 with 128MB of ram.
Wish I have the money to upgrade soon |
