Maybe its time to tone down the thread, Jezebel looks a little stressed!

Maybe. But also in Africa there are no obesity or diet problems like in the west.

Hehehe, sorry Budoka! I didn't mean to grump in your thread

It's just as an American, I'm really REALLY tired of coming across these American trashing threads every other day. I just find it to be pretty damn hypocritical for people to talk about how awful Americans are when so many people start these threads to bash us. I've yet to start a thread to randomly bash another country based on cheesy facts, or because I happened to meet one or two people from that country who were rude, stupid, boring, fat or whatever. I just don't like being insulted when I have never done anything wrong - and yes this thread insults me personally. That's why I wish it would die. I know my responding doesn't help but I just wanted to clarify my stressfulness

*goes back to her grumbling*

The thing is, it shouldn't insult you personally. That's why i don't like people who are too patriotic. you make a remark about their country, and they become personally offended.

There is no logical reason for this.

It's not like you are personally responsible for the state of your country or anything. People should be able to discuss flaws in political systems, or statistics about countries without getting any personal feelings involved.

Excuse me... but I seemed to have missed something here. You are not insulting the country, you are insulting the people who live there! That would be me. So, yes, I am still personally insulted. Wake up people! Just because a country's leader does a certain thing or thinks one way, it doesn't mean the entire country does! I hate politicians, I think the country would be better run by rabid baboons.

grrr... no more responses from me.

You Americans are too defensive.

Nah, just kidding.

America just has bad fucking PR.
I have yet to personally meet a single stupid, fat, excessively exuberant and sexually repressed American (this being the general "stereotyped" American). And I've been to America thrice, have an American girlfriend and consider myself rather well informed (for a dumb foreigner) of the situation in America...

So, it's your public image you have to clean up. And on the lowest level, you're doing it right here, right now. By expressing your opinions in a manner that shows you for what you really are: individuals not bound to a national stereotype any more than anyone else. www.sijun.com may not be the place for global change, but maybe you can convince someone out of their misconceptions.

Bah, enough optimistic bullshit from this Finnish fuck.

Yeah, I thought it was one of the best I have ever heard. Its a quote from Kurt Cobain (of Nirvana).

A great man and one of my childhood idols. A bit morbid now maybe - tho I think he should be remembered for all the great things he said and the ways he said them were important.
Yours is pretty neat too, tho I think if I ever tried it I would get slapped.

"Remember, it's better to burn out than fade away. Peace, Love, and empathy,
Kurt Cobain."

that really is kind of a cool quote...

"burning out" meaning giving till you can't give anymore

and "fading away" meaning sort of the opposite...

good ol' Kurt Cobain...

I, for one, enjoy being a swaggering braggadocio of an American, and I watch with reserved irony as our country paves over the cultural landscape of the planet. None of this would piss you off if you'd only realize it was basic human nature to crave our decadent lifestyle. The qualities that you despise in us are exactly what you fear and recognize in yourself. Furthermore, unlike most Americans, you can't rectify your love for fast foods, computer technology and Hollywood. Like a moth drawn to the flame, the enticing benefits of our beliefs compel you to consume our culture and curse us in the same breath. How odd you look! If it is that we rule the world, perhaps it's because we realize better than any who and what we are. Can you say the same?

Wrong Pat. We know who we are, we don't like fast food and we can rectify.
And hey, who among you rectify their love for computers and fast food?

And please, more than the 70% of movies Hollywood makes are rubbish.

WE SIMPLY CAN'T AFFORD TO MUDDLE ON THROUGH LIFE WITH PETTY ARGUMENTS AND PREJUDICE TOTALLY IGNORING EVERYONE ELSE BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR EYES. THINK ABOUT IT.

Actually, I was being pretty facetious (read playfully jocular) with perhaps a touch of irony. America is without a doubt the most conflicted and chaotic cultural stewpot ever conceived. Anyone who buys that we really know who we are hasn't paying too much attention. Rather, I suspect America's identity is much more tied up in what we *aren't*.

Ragnarok: the most insidious aspect of cultural pollution is the unthinking way we embrace it. You're quite right that Americans don't rectify their fast food habits or love of computer technology. I don't think many of us do, regardless of where we are situated geographically. We all wear civilization like an ill-fitting mask. Each McDonald's burger we scarf down thoughtlessly creates the need to plow another acre of the rainforest. Budoka: Every aspect of your life has similarly profound ramifications to your fellow man and your environment. However, it is both a curse and a blessing that we can't even see or begin to imagine the cumulative effect our actions have. We "muddle through life" trying to do the best we can. We don't have a choice about that. I believe this is an inescapable truth. I also believe that standing in judgement of others becomes a fruitless endeavor if you can't even tally the results of your own actions. About the only thing you do have the power to effectivly change is yourself. So what does it matter if I'm a "swaggering baggadocio" or someone else is a "small minded prick?" There are always going to be people like that, just as there are always going to be people who use petty arguments, are prejudiced and DO ignore people if they're not right in front of them.

Injustice seems to be built into the way things are, but the karmic wheel seems to come around every once and a while. Don't for a single minute think every poor choice we make doesn't cost us somewhere. Using another fast food example, our drive-though eating habits are most likely responsible for our abnormally high heart disease. Fast food is decentralizing the age-old tradition of family dinners --with untold social consequences. The list goes on and on.

My advice: try and pick battles you can win. Don't get overly upset with others but rather try and concentrate on making yourself the ideal you.

-Pat

P.S. Ragnarok- you really think Hollywood is only pumping out 70% rubbish? You're far too charitable; I would have guessed it was more like 90%.

Don't take this to be my normal temperament, I'm having a bit of a high stress day. The point of posting this topic was just to gauge the attitudes people have. I personally have never eaten junk food, (sampled McDonalds - but just enough to find the 'Mc' justified) and have a quite well rounded lifestyle following the things I believe in and not those imposed upon me by others. I look to aspects of my own culture and take from them elements I would like to incorporate into my own lifestyle as well as aspects from other cultures (healthy eating, exercise, martial arts and dedication form china and japan for instance).
I did not expect to win any 'battles' from this thread, just tried to bring a few people round to my way of thinking for a change.

I happen to belive that we should be handing out contraceptives instead of more food, the more food in the world the more starving people there are. Read the book Ishmael by Robert Quinn and you'll understand what I'm saying
