When I turn resaturation down to zero, and use a brush as a blender, I get these little black specs that shows up and gets blended in with the area I'm trying to blend. Why does it happen? If the resaturation is turned down to zero, shouldn't there be no colors showing up at all?

I've had this problem happen several times as well. I think it's just another bug in Painter 7, a program that's already notorious for its flaws. It seems those little black dots appear and then you can't paint over them no matter what you do. Maybe someone has a different explanation, this is just a guess on my part.

As for myself, I think I'll be sticking to PS and Deep Paint.

Lunatique,

A few questions:

1. What steps did you take to lower the saturation to "zero"? In Effects > Tonal Control > Adjust Colors, "zero" is the normal state and the lowest the Saturation slider can go is to -139%, to simulate greyscale (Painter doesn't have true greyscale).

2. Are you painting on a Layer, or on the Canvas?

3. What brush category and brush variant are you using?

4. If you made any adjustments to the brush variant, what were they?

Generally speaking, brush variants in Painter that are meant to be used to blend or smear just move the existing colored, black, or white pixels around. Among these variants are:

Liquid's Coarse Smear
Liquid's Grainy Water
Just Add Water
Liquid's Smear
Liquid's Smudge

Tinting's Blender

None of these add color, even with their Opacity set to 100%, though a high Opacity setting "strengthens" the effect the brush has on existing color.

Other brush variants do have smeary and/or blending qualities and while they do primarily paint color, they also smear color from the Canvas or other existing color. A couple of examples would be:

Brush's Smeary Round
Version 5 Brush's Brushy

Unless the brush variant you chose for blending has characteristics that include laying down color, or moving it in such as way as to make it look like there are new colored pixels being added (i.e. the Liquid's Coarse Smear), you may be having a display problem or the file may be corrupted.

Try this:

1. Save the file (or if you haven't done much with it, just close the file).

2. Shut down Painter.

3. In the Painter 7 > Brushes folder, delete the Pre-built Brush File.

4. Reboot, then open Painter and your file again.

If you have Undo set to the maximum 32, try lowering the number as it takes up memory.

Organize your custom brush variants into separate Libraries and keep the Default Painter Brushes Library just as it was when installed. Do the same with other Libraries for Patterns, Papers, etc. Having too much in a brush library can also affect Painter's performance.

If you have problems with corrupted RIFF files, save them uncompressed (check the Uncompressed box when saving the file).

Regularly:

After each Painter session, check the Pre-built Brush File's size and delete it if it's become large. When too large, it can slow down and possibly otherwise affect Painter's performance. If you don't know already, you'll learn what "too large" is for your system.

Clear out browser cache and temp files several times a day if necessary.

Run ScanDisk and Defrag at least once a week.

If you can give us more details, maybe we can figure out what's going on and get it fixed.

Good luck,

Does zooming in and then out again help? If so, its probably a video driver issue.
