Hi... I was thinking today...

I haven't used Poser since version 2 or something of that sort, but as far as I've understood it their models are pretty much anatomically correct nowadays... so I was thinking, wouldn't it be possible to use poser models for reference photos?

Like wolfchicks thread about using herself as a model for her paintings, wouldn't it in that case be easier to make the poser model into the pose/anatomical preference that you want and then just using that as reference when you paint, the same way you would had you just taken a picture to get the reference...

I'm not talking about using the reference to the extent that the face would look the same and all that, but just to get the anatomical properties and all that correct?

Anybody have any thoughts on this? I'm not saying that poser should be used to get the actual models to use in the picture, but rather to have something to look at for anatomical reference...

Any thoughts?

Hmm. Do the current poser models have good deformation? If not, they won't be too useful if you need to depict accurately stretched skin, muscle, expression...etc. I've seen a lot of so called "paintings" where someone just paints over a poser model. Some are quite well done, but pretty obvious looking. However, your approach would be to use it soely as a visual reference. I think you can get some good results that way, depending on how natural and life-like you need your particular painting to be.

Personally that's the only use I've ever really found for poser, using it a little like an artist's mannequin. It's useful for seeing the effects of foreshortening and such, but obviously don't follow it slavishly or it could look too stiff. You also have to go to the trouble of getting a decent pose to start with.

that's true... I doubt they've made them that lifelike... skinstretches and stuff I mean... and also flab and such, how that would hang if a person were sitting down as opposed to standing up (they usually just do fat on stomachs as bulbous spherelike things, which is not quite what it looks like in rl)... so you're right about that... but I suppose it could be good for general anatomical issues (how long is this arm supposed to be) and forshortening and such... it just seems very versatile to me...

It's nice for a quick reference, I have version 4 which is the latest I think. Almost more trouble than it's worth trying to get them into a decent pose though.

I have never used this program and I don't know much about it.
Does it have a variety of people forms? Is it easy to get the pose you want? It sounds like there is not much detail in it but maybe you'd just add that later. I'm wanting to create a muscled angel (man) and so I cannot use myself for the pose, so I need reference. Do you guys think this program is worth it? Maybe I'll just go to my gym and ask a muscle head to pose for me.

^!!^
EDIT~had to fix my smile face
