I had to learn my lesson the hard way.
I used to customize the crap out of my art apps(PS, Max..etc). It made my workflow smooth and fast.
Then, one day, I find myself having to use the same apps on another machine.
I looked like an idiot because I couldn't find my way around the default UI.
I went from being an experienced user to a total dork. Luckily, it happened at a place I've worked at for a while, so people that witnessed my dilemma was understanding about it.
But imagine this:
You are interviewing for a job. The interviewing person asks you to model something in (any 3D app), or paint something in (any 2D app), and you look like a total moron becaused you can't even get around in the default UI.
See the danger in using customized UI?
Since that incident, I've learned my lesson and stuck to the default UI and commands. If I need to use a different copy of the apps, I carry a floppy that contains my own UI/command preferences. |

Heh, yeah. THAT works... *rolls eyes*
*fumbling over interface* "Oh, um... heh, I use a customised interface most of the time..."
*unconvinced important person* "Mmmhmm... sure."
And if that ain't the case, then it's bitching about why a certain hotkey won't work only to have the default key pointed out by a room full of people. @;-) |

EXACTLY.
I hate it when people give you that, "Yeeeeah...SURE" look.
My first year on Max, I completely recustomized practically ALL the hot keys and the UI. When I was confronted with the default UI for the first time, it was like, "OMIGOD, WHAT have I DONE to myself?!"
So, now I stick to the default ones, no matter how impractical or silly some of them are. |
