I played around with Deep Paint last year, and I remember it as a stripped down version of Painter, but with more gimmicky gooey paints.

Well, I downloaded it again to confirm that memory, since I've been using Painter a lot more these days.

Most of the brushes in Deep Paint are pretty much gimmicky gooey things that are pretty much useless to serious illustrators. I mean, do you REALLY want all that gooey paint with bump and shine in your paintings? I think not. I tried to get some practical results with the brushes, but they really are pretty useless. The ones that are not gimmicky are useless to me too, since Painter has all of them and more.

So, my conclusion: If you have Painter, don't even bother with Deep Paint.

Here's what the gimmicky brush work look like. Can you imagine using this on a serious illustration?

It's funny how you tried the Deeppaint (mine is the 3d version) same time as I When I had painted 10 minutes I thought myself this sucks.. 30 minutes later I was still using it and I thought the program is pretty good, and after about an hour I thought this is very good!

Here's a little test I made with it. The 3d isn't mine, it's one of the example files and the picture on the right side has the original textures, my "paintover" is on the left.

Aha!! I knew there had to be SOME practical applications for Deep Paint. I didn't think of using it that way!

But, I discovered that you can get similar impasto look with Painter(just not as...dramatic). Also, with Painter, you can turn off the impasto. I'm not sure if you can do that in Deep Paint.

Lunatique,

While the example shown below is meaningless scribbles done while I was experimenting with a combination of Impasto and Liquid Ink variants in Painter 7.. as opposed to Bg's example that does have some meaning in the image itself, I think it demonstrates that Painter's Impasto brushes can be quite dramatic if that's what the artist wants:

In addition to positive or negative depth control, Impasto brushes (or other brushes set to paint with Impasto) can be set to paint depth using various sources: Uniform, the current Paper, Original Luminance (either the current Pattern or a user-specified image). Among other things, in the Impasto Lighting dialog box, adjustments can be made for Appearance of Depth: Amount, Picture (luminance can be decreased), Shine, Reflection (reflected current Pattern or user-specified image; Lighting Controls include Lightness and Exposure; Light Color over the whole image and Light Source can be changed.

Since the next image is a large file, I'll just post the URL. It's a sampler using various brush, Paper texture, and Pattern combinations to emboss the Canvas' surface with both positive and negative depth and with and without color, sometimes using other images, with Define Pattern checked, as the source of depth. There are "a million" ways these tools and materials can be used to do just about anything you could dream up, and the techniques certainly could be used in illustration.. perhaps more subtly so they don't look so exaggerated and shiny.. though that might be just the ticket depending on what the artist is aiming for. Notice how the repeat embossed pattern fades into the Canvas around the edges where I lightened my pressure. The whole surface could have been done that way had I not been trying to show "drama".

A much more natural look can be achieved by using brushes set to lower Impasto depth, less shine, etc., and/or mixed with other brushes that have no Impasto depth at all.

I hope this demos the possibilities just a little. If not, I had fun playing.

Happy New Year, everyone!

I tried the evaluation copy of Deep Paint 3D with texture weapons. It seemed to be really handy for erasing seams. But not worth the cost. For that much damn money I can wing it in Photoshop

Jinny- You are like a Christmas gift! I don't think I've seen anyone so knowledgable about Painter(except maybe Pat). I played around with Deep Paint some more, and it's just not worth the time since it's so obviouly not comparable to Painter. I'm sticking with Painter!

Lunatique,

Thanks for letting me know I've been some kind of help to you. It's very nice to be referred to as a "Christmas present" (as long as it's one you want and you don't feel like returning it).

Naturally, because I'm biased, it's good to hear you're sticking with Painter. It's a program that takes time to learn and every minute is worthwhile, so don't give up. If you need help, stop by the Painter Forum at In Depth Discussions and ask all the questions you need to. Also, read through the message archives to see what we've been doing and you'll find lots of good information and art done by members.

Feel free to write to me, also.. at [email protected]. Just remind me where we met.. since I get so much mail it's hard to remember everyone. Of course, you do have a nicely unique name.. and that helps.

Happy New Year!
