One of my drawing instructors in high school used to have us look at a still life for about 10 minutes and mentally note everything about it, then she put a sheet over it and said, "Now draw it!" After a few weeks of this, she only let us see it for 5 minutes, then one minute, then only 30 seconds.
Also, you should be practicing gesture drawings. Just try to get the pose/flow of the person within a few seconds. Combine the two, rinse-lather-repeat.
