For those of you that dont know, the Loomis project is the Andrew Loomis book Figure Drawing For All It's Worth hosted in full on my website www.yoyodyne.net. I have been getting lots of requests for a full PDF or otherwise simple way to download and print out the book. I would like to make the PDF available on the site but I am unsure of the legal aspects of making the book so easily copied. If anyone knows the legal aspects I'd like to know. If you just have two cents you'd like to drop in thats fine too. |

i'm sorry, but scanning in and publishing the book on the web is illegal.
there are "some people" making every effort to republish Loomis' books currently. i don't think anybody want that they won't be able to sell the books after republishing, because everybody have it already in a little crappy psd file or whatever, don't you think? you shouldn't be sued at the moment, though. Probably the current copyright holders won't even notice that the book lies on every second server already. This could change when it is republished. But in the end it's up to you what you do, no?
Don't misunderstand me, i think every aspiring artist should be able to get his book (without paying a few hundred dollars for a copy), but a) it's illegal to scan, save, publish copyrighted material and b) books are way cooler anyway! so just wait and pray that it'll be republished soon folks.
btw, there is a german version of Figure Drawing For All It's Worth available. Bud Plant imported and should have some in stock. |

Hmm... has this been collected to one file anywhere though... it's a bit tedious to sit and open/print 204 pages...
what happened to Anthonys loomis project? |

I stopped it because I didn't want to get in the way of the new publisher's efforts. |

Anyone know who this new publisher is? I've never heard any real evidence that this is going to happen.
strata - Yes I have a PDF of the whole thing. Took it to Kinkos and they printed it out no problem on 8.5 x 11. |

I've heard for a long time that the book as going to be re-published, same with Creative Illustration. I haven't found any info on the republish, and have looked into a lot of info from friends I made in the book industry over nine years.
Until a clear picture of the timing of all of this emerges, I'd say there's a responsibility to get this info to those who need and will use it. |

Thank you, Ian.
I want to follow up quickly by stating that my own belief is that the general and most basic levels of instruction in drawing and image-making should be available to anyone, and they should be free.
It is the fault of no one, save perhaps a copyright holder who failed to see the importance of the Loomis books coming around again after that dreadful backlash against representational art, that this information is not available. I would love to attribute the current situation around his books to lack of foresight, and nothing more.
I think that if Mr. Loomis were able, he would love to have, of any publisher, Dover republish his work. It would be inexpensive, well-crafted in material, and an available and attractive boon to anyone who wants not just to draw, but to understand, the figure. |
