After reading Jabberwockey's post about his XP problem with Photoshop and the ensuing comments by his instructor, I was reminded of the time I was told I wasn't a real designer or illustrator, because I wasn't using a Mac.
Now I have since put that to rest, because my portfolio speaks for itself, and I do get paid for being a creative - on a PC, so it doesn't bother me - anymore at least.
But I was wondering if any of you other "non-real" creatives have ever run into the same problem and how you dealt with them. Any stories? Anyone? |

oh jeez... it makes no difference what you use...as long as you're comfortable using it; and it does what you need it to do.
I've used both macs and NT machines. I use macs now 'cause I'm more comfortable with them. Big deal.
I guess I must be a real loser because I have stuff on my site done with macs, some with NT machines, and believe it or not, some stuff done with pointy sticks that had graphite inside...
Don't listen to anyone but yourself, do your best work, and enjoy what you do. If people can't accept that, screw 'em.
I just tell 'em-The rest of the world always looks shitty when your head's up your ass |

I've gotten told from time to time that I really shouldn't be working on a pc, but my pc is more powerful than the macs in the mac lab (no this is not a pc better than mac blah blah thread, I just have a high spec pc that's all) but I just don't care. I'll work on the machine that is helping me to get stuff done faster, and that is the pc. Not to mention that I'm more comfortable with the shortcut keys on the pc. And I have more of a clue about what to do if something goes wrong on a pc too. But it helps to be able to switch from pc to mac and back with little effort so I say it is best to get reasonably comfortable with both, that's all. Oh, and I've never had any of my instructors tell me a mac is better, just students. |

We do not use a Macintosh, instead we use a Tandy!
Mac is for rich boys, PC is for bums who know somethin about computers. Probably. More or less. |

Before I enacted a policy of not mentioning my tools, I got a lot of shit for using Animation:Master . . . it usually went something like this:
Them: "Oh wow, that's great! It looks so real, just like this place I know."
Me: "Thanks!"
Them: "Did you do it Maya/LW/XSI/C4D/EI/MAX?"
Me: "No, I used one called Animation:Master"
Them: "You should really try a high end package."
Me: "Didn't you just say my work was excellent? Why should I change my tools?"
Them: "Lightwave has hypervoxels. They used it for <movie>."
Me: "So?"
Them: "Ponies are pretty. BORK!"
On the non-visual side of things, I get hassled for making my techno music on a computer instead of using old analog gear . . . and usually the people doing the hassling think of themselves as big-time futurists. Go figure.
"He didn't spend as much as me! He's cheating!" |

I had a teacher in school that was all up on the pc vs. mac. she was teaching my course, "Introduction to Macintosh Culture".
yes, thats right, macintosh culture. i wont go into details, but it usually started off with, "The other day I was working on my Mac, and I realized, that PC's cant do this!"
And being the wise ass I was, (and still am) I got right into the thick of it with her.
Now I just dont care. Getting the job done is much more important then what platform your using and how it compares to the other guy. It's to old skool in thinking. n it hurts my right hemisphere. |

Don - I agree with you whole heartily and have practiced that same principle.
My apologies all - for I did not mean to start "my toy is better than your toy" thread.
Usually when the hardcore Mac users ask in astonishment why I am not using a Mac, I tell them that I am "Thinking Differently".
In all fairness, there are many Mac users like you, Don, that see the talent of the person and not the tools they choose to use. |

Okay anyway, I use Mac at school and PC at home. The only real promblem I have is I Alt + C (+V +X) a lot when I get home to my Ctrl... It's those short cut keys that I have problem with... and the whole Zip disk thing. Keep it PC formatted it'll crash... Mac formatted PC won't see.
Honestly I wouldn't give up my PC for a dang Mac. My Mac freezes 3 times a day. No matter what I do with it. Our Macs at school are alway crashing. Had to reformat 8 in the first week of school. Oh and I HATE the one button thing going on with mac mice! |

it's not the tools you use, it's the way you use them. |

Ah...it went like this. I was discussing and comping out some web designs for a client. The job was given to me, because the in-house designer was doing more of the print stuff - not web, and I had worked with the project lead on other web design projects, so he asked me in. When the in-house designer found out I was using an NT Workstation, he freaked out and claimed that only real, professional creatives use Macs. In other words, you're not a designer unless you're working on a Mac.
There was a time in the not too distant past when Macs were better suited for graphics work, but the advent and ensuing evolution of Microsoft's 32 bit OS and proliferation of super duper graphics cards has placed the NT Workstation (or Win2K as is my present case) in par - if not above - the Mac platform.
Now I am not anti-Mac. I can work on either. I've gone on site (as a contractor) and worked on Macs. If I work from home or at my present job, I use my "Wintel" box. I prefer my PC; it's a dual PIII 1 ghz ABIT VP6 with GeForce2 32 meg card; I capture via Firewire, edit and render video as well as do web design (my staple for living). There isn't one Mac on the market that can excel it's capacity - and it costs less.
The nature of my work requires a PC. I work for a company that builds ASP driven applications, so naturally it makes sense from a production standpoint to develop on a PC - it's a PC environment.
I should have phrased this topic as Macs "and" PCs. Damn. |

I hear the debate about Macs for my graphic designer mate all the time, like how they're 50% faster than a PC of the same MHz rating.
But I'm a PC dinosaur. As soon as the Mac I used crashed when I clicked "Save as...", I swore I'd never touch one again. |
