Got my hands on the two-disk FF DVD finally and it's great.

While the movie has it's little niggles (unrefined script, slightly off animation, and the most cliche baddy in the history of film), I am just so amazed at the artistry that went into that film. Practically every frame of every scene is dribble material.

Craig's matte paints work SO well in the film too.

There's a small featurette on disk2 about the matte painting. It's mainly about one of the in-house painters, showing various stages and before/after shots, and then at the end there's a montage of matte paintings showing them building up in stages (and this section has a lot of Craig's stuff).

Oh, and there's the Thriller video clip. Funny stuff.

Row.

i thought it was absolutly amazing how much detail that concept/matt painting guy did with the city. he made slums, individual apartments, arcades, restauraunts...so much work that goes unoticed in the film.

i kinda felt bored watching the documentary, it was way too long.

yeah got the dvd a few weeks ago, i agree more for the artistic quality than the plot though. the textures skull fuck me, the modeling fantastic, and the animation was good but glitzy at times. hehe, yeah the bad guy was cliche but damn i love those facial animations...that suicide attempt is too cool. i still say the ending was dumb, or should've ended differently.

i was just watching the dvd, listening to the commentary by a few of the art directors. when they showed one of the barrier cities, one of the guys said something like "this is one of the wonderful matte paintings by craig mullins." i'd have to agree with him.

I gotta go with :: soilborn :: on the whole brilliant skull-fucking thing. Love it. Just got turned onto Mullins a few days ago, too -- his site's got better zooms on all the bits of the city dome -- and the Tucson WIDE, WIDE shot really dings my button. Sweet stuff.

Personally, the movie is an anime with a massive budget, way more animation, and of course the ridiculous American voice actors. It would pack more punch had Japanese voice actors taken the helm. It really is an anime at heart. Especially when Gaia does the whole groinal tentacle healing thing.

Well, wait. That's more hentai, anyway. And I know nothing of REAL culture, Japanese or otherwise, so I'll withdraw now like a beaten dog.

Still, good movie. : )

i can't believe it! one minor mistake, the dialogue, have taken away the chance of what could be the next StarWars.
