Hello. I would like to know the difference between Photoshop and Painter Classic. Does Painter Classic provide better painting tools and is better to use? Would paintings look better if they were painted with Painter Classic? What other differences are there?

Photoshop sucks, Painter does not! There you have it! Actually, do a seach on the forum and you should find multiple threads covering this question...

Painter Classic is really just the basics of Painter going back to version 5 without Layers. Painter 6 has layers plus a lot of cool brushes plus scripting. Painter Classic is a good introduction to Painter. If you like your work with Painter Classic you will love version 6 of Painter. It is sort of like the difference between Photoshop and Photoshop LE. Many things in the Painter 6 just are not availible in Classic. You can upgrade from Classic to 6. Check Corel's website for information.

if you will read any tablet or Painter thread..I am on there like a Painter thumping, holy rolling evangelist for Metacreations..because I LOVE Painter. I have used it since version 3 on the Mac, and I *only* draw\paint in Painter, but I use Photoshop for other things...there are certain things Painter cannot do (I sound like PADME!) and certain things I would not do with it (QUEEN AMIDALA)...but for drawing and Painting, I use Painter 5.03. Here's why:

1. Painter is FAST. Photoshop is not..a quick line gets lost with Photoshop many a time, and Painter keeps up great. Be sure to have a USB Wacom tablet, tho eve a serial tablet works fine with Painter.

2. I don't like the line quality of Painter 6, but I love the lines that Painter 5.03 or 5.5 makes...handles pressure beautifully..it is like drawing with a brand new marker on smooth acetate. Photoshop makes very boring, straight, not very well tapered lines. I am talking what the program does with a nice, confident stroke of the stylus.

3. Painter lets you rotate the canvas, like you'd rotate paper. Photoshop does not allow this.

4. 32 undos with CNTRL Z. Photoshop 6 apparently allows this, but I don't have Photoshop 6, and PS 5 makes you use the stupid history menu, which takes me out of my flow for a second, and that is a second too long when you draw fast like me.

5. Painter lets you input your personal pressure curve so it can customize the pressure response of the tablet..does that make sense?

6. Painter has a simple water tool which rules for laying down color...does not disturb the line. Photoshop does this too with Multiply and a layer, but the Photoshop brushes suck compared to Painter..AND Painter lets you resize the brushes on the fly with CNTRL-ALT.

Try it...you'll like it..be sure to have a Wacom.

(Sorry, just got out of an art school that was extremely Painter & Wacom phobic. It's made me more tweaked than usual.)

Here is the way I look at the two programs:

Painter is for creating images. Drawing, painting, smearing, and so on; are all far superior in Painter. (And I disagree about Painter6's line quality -- I find it to be much better than earlier versions.)

Photoshop is for editing images. Once you've created in Painter, bring that baby into PS and composite, filter, color-correct, etc. there.

Sometimes I wind up going back & forth, sometimes it's Painter, PS, done.

But that, at least from my perspective, is the difference between Painter & PS.
