I think the split is like that:
90% Photoshop
6% Painter
3% corel, etc.
1% Mario Paint (that would be me!) |

Me, I use Photoshop most of the time, Painter upon request, and other programs with extreme reluctance. (But I'm planning on learning Maya and 3DSMAX so I can snag more jobs.)
There's a lot of info. on tablets, and their good and bad sides, on the forums' FAQ. Also, there are a few threads on tablets already going right now. The gist seems to be: Tablets = good.
Art school? Yep. I'm just finishing up my B.FA at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. I'll be done at Christmas. Go, me. But, on a cautionary note...I didn't find art school that useful after first year. First year was great--lots of technical help, lots of figure drawing, and LOTS of criticism. It was brilliant. I learned more that year than I'd learned in the whole rest of my life. But after that, it got all artsy-fartsy--like three years of interpretive dance on paper and canvas. Scary. Blurgh. Fourth year is hardly school at all at Emily Carr. One does one's own thing in the drawing department, finishes up the last few academic requirements one's been putting off. I have learned more from the forums than I have in art school.
My advice to anyone who wants to draw really well is...well...draw often. Every day, draw something, no matter what. And you WILL improve. If I can improve, then anybody can. |

I used to use PC Paint. But mario Paint is sooo much better. j/k
I use photoshop. Tried the lite version of Painter that came bundled with my tablet but the interface was too annoying to me. I have Corel Draw at work. I found it usefull for converting things into vectorized graphics but haven't really tried it for anything else.
I never went to art school. Took some lame art classes during Jr. High and high school and that's about it. I could be so much better then I am now if I drew more often and I think that is the most important thing. I've only recently been trying to get back into drawing (and digital painting) and during this short period of time I have read all kinds of articles tutorials etc on the internet and after a while it all starts to sink in. I'm definitely getting better the more I keep at it.
Although I seriously doubt you drooled over anything I posted. More likely it was something from someone who went to an art school. So take that into consideration. |

I use Photoshop and Painter. Photoshop for serious image editing - but Painter for ... well, anything artistic - although I'm pretty new to Painter and the tablet way of doing things -- the toolset in Painter I find more condusive for a natural look.
Bad aspects of getting a tablet ?! Well, all I can think of as a downside of tablets is their price.
I paid $500 CAN for my WACOM Intuos, but I haven't looked back - it's a WHOLE new world for drawing/painting -- and when you're finished working there's no cleanup - just Ctrl-S and Alt-F4 !
Drawing with a mouse is like buttering bread with a shoe!
Tablets have been out for quite a while now, but the new advances in tablet technology have left us with what I consider to be the BEST advance of all - NO BATTERIES in the STYLUS! The new WACOM stylus is powered by the tablet surface which saves you TONS of money on those little watch batteries.
No one is born drawing well (period)
Everyone here has had SOME sort of training - some might say they're self taught - but they probably have a collection of books they have worked from.
Figure drawing classes are by far the HOLY GRAIL for artists as they truly force you to open your eyes and THINK while you draw.
Practise, practise, practise ... not to mention posting your work here - I've read some very valuable posts here!
Oh - here are some books I consider preemo reference on the subject of drawing :
Creative Perspective for Artists and Illustrators
Ernest W. Watson
ISBN 0-486-27337-7
Bridgmans Life Drawing
George B. Bridgeman
ISBN 0-486-22710-3
Dynamic Figure Drawing 0-8230-1577-7
Drawing Dynamic Hands 0-8230-1368-5
Drawing the Human head 0-8230-1376-6
Burne Hogarth
Hope this helps,
Sammy
