When I turn a jpg to a gif it looses a lot of detail, isn't as smooth, and the colour messes up... how can i fix this prob?

Generally, you can't. Jpeg uses lossy compression, and gif uses a 256 color palette. They're just not very compatible with each other.
But... what program are you using? That may make some difference.
There are also a few tricks you can do to get rid of jpeg artifacts which may help a bit when converting to gif. But you're still pretty limited. Try doubling the resolution of the image, blurring it slightly, then scaling it back down. That might help. |

If you paint with millions of colors, then it doesn't matter what you do, the gif will look like crap. |

So keep them small... I figured there might not be much I could do. It's gif animator. I'm not too worried about it. Just a few graphics for a friend's web site.

but its not only that gifs uses 256 colors but also that the jpg is gfx-compressed ...isnt it?
