When I turn a jpg to a gif it looses a lot of detail, isn't as smooth, and the colour messes up... how can i fix this prob?

Generally, you can't. Jpeg uses lossy compression, and gif uses a 256 color palette. They're just not very compatible with each other.

But... what program are you using? That may make some difference.

There are also a few tricks you can do to get rid of jpeg artifacts which may help a bit when converting to gif. But you're still pretty limited. Try doubling the resolution of the image, blurring it slightly, then scaling it back down. That might help.

If you paint with millions of colors, then it doesn't matter what you do, the gif will look like crap.

So keep them small... I figured there might not be much I could do. It's gif animator. I'm not too worried about it. Just a few graphics for a friend's web site.

but its not only that gifs uses 256 colors but also that the jpg is gfx-compressed ...isnt it?
