Everytime I try to paint a picture in Photoshop 5.0 the shit crashes before I can finish anything-some kind of access violation I think.

I'm runnin' 32Mb RAM with Voodoo 3. Is the ram the prob? or options with the V3?

32 MB of RAM is weak. I am pretty sure that is your problem. (could be wrong) I wouldn't really try to run it without 128 MB of RAM, but that is my preference.
