interesting idea.

pretty pointless tho. I'm guessing that what I'm seeing (if it's 3D) is a model with textures scaned from the Vampi comic book and touched up? http://www.vampirella.com/

not sure what the point of it is really. The pose is the same as a promo pic I've seen and the textures are going to look silly when the lighting that has been established from the original coloured line drawing goes against the 3D lighting. and in the end the oroginal pic look better.

That's probably no 3D. Believe me...

If it was done by who I'm thinking of, then it most likely is a drawing by another artist projection-mapped onto a Hash A:M model. There's a guy on the A:M mailing list who does a lot of this. I've talked to him about it, and he seems pretty content with all the flak people throw at him, and isn't interested in changing his technique.

Its a shame, because he's a really nice dude, and believe it or not, the models he builds underneath other people's paintings are pretty tight.

:/

THIS IS A DRAWING. I have no idea why anyone would think this is 3d.

I'm not sure what you think you are looking at. This looks like a really bad scan of Kevin Lau's Vampi drawn by Kevin Lau with a Kevin Lau background also drawn by Kevin Lau, but I don't see Kevin Lau's signature for once...oh wait.. that is his signature. Kevin Lau didn't color it though.. the colorist's name is only mentioned once in the book instead of on every picture like Kevin Lau. (Anyone who has seen this book should get the joke.)

Must be that new program "Pencil-ink-Photoshop" I hear so much about.

edit: You would think after seeing his name a gazillion times I'd know it.

Because he is soooo cool.

Look at the top of the metal cylinder in the bottom right. In 3d the perspective lines wouldn't be so wrong

Why would anyone go through so much trouble to make a 3d model look like a crappy scan? I'm almost positive this is just a promo drawing for the comic. I see nothing.. NOTHING... on here that indicates it is 3d. Prove me wrong.. get the artist to change the angle.

Looks fine to me.
Chapel, you sound so vehement in your opposition to this piece. I think it's quite nice. Maybe he's a fan, and felt compelled to make some fan art, like most people do. It very well could be a rip off. don't know. I'ver never heard of Kevin Lau up till now. I'll email him and ask him how he did it, if possible.

Just a little.. I just don't see how anyone could possibly think this drawing was 3d unless somebody was "claiming" they made it in 3d. And if they are... boy.. Kevin Lau would have a fit. I mean.. look at his promo pic I posted. He is in it twice and his signature is there 4 times.... think he likes credit?

Chapel, buddy, READ MY FIRST REPLY.

It is a drawing projection-mapped onto 3D models . . . I know the guy who did this, and he does a lot of this kind of thing.

Here's his site even:
http://www.cactusbud.com/

I don't agree with it as art, but it /is/, at its core, a 3D piece.

Ok.. I'm looking at that site and I'm thinking.. "eh". Why? I don't get it. Nothing looks 3d which kind of defeats the purpose of 3d. Is there like some hidden 3d technique that I'm not aware of that is supposed to make this impressive. Like Rinaldo said.. none of the images will work from other angles. The Zealot thing he did looks like a Jim lee picture from the front.. looks like an amateur penciler from behind. He is basically making card board cut outs. Oh well.. I'm done with this thread.
