I've got a problem with the expression in this face. He's supposed to look into very bright light. But instead he seems to cry. You tell me now what I did wrong! Thanks.

I think his head needs to be further back - the bright light not only makes you shut your eyes, but also pull your head back / turn away from the light slightly. The pose would actually be quite un-natural, since staring into a v bright light IS an un-natural thing to do!

You could close his mouth. I think that's the reason it looks like he is crying.

Yeah. Also, closing his mouth would prevent light from getting in.

or if you don't want to completely close his mouth, just grit his teeth.

face away from the light, needs squint lines around his eyes, and close his mouth (maybe put a grimace on his mouth)

Yeah, I know it's a lousy sketch. But I don't want to go into colouring without solving that problem. HELP ME!

Put his hand up, in front of his face shielding his eyes from the light.
I think it's a pretty good sketch.

Thanks a lot for replying. You are a god!

Well his hands are used elsewhere

I don't think that those two gestures aren't the same. Crying doesn't look like blinding, does it?

Woah, just returned from school. Can't believe I got so many replies

@synj: Well, it's just a piece of a larger image and I can't let him look away, 'cause he tries to recognize something in the light.

@ all: You know what I mean? He looks into bright light and thinks there is something so he stares to see what lies behind.

@ micke: The idea with that open mouth I took from my own mimics. When I look into bright light I look like this. Didn't know that I'm the only one.

[edit] I guess that cramped expression in the face is created by the eyes which try to shield from the light by pulling together. So the upper-lipp follows the contraction of the eyes.

I'm not proper at explaining in a foreign language. Hope you get the point.

Ok... I moved on to colouring. But I realized that I still got some problems with this guy:

The shovel in his hands just looks wrong. Size, colour ...just everything. I originally wanted to do it metal-like. But I couldn't figure out how to do the light proper on such a shovel and I remembered that I never saw a metal shovel anyways. So I changed it to a good old german shovel in RED

The ligt source coming from the lamp above his head will be added later when I got all those shapes right.

Be nice and POST!!!!!!!!!!!

[edit]
forgot the pic

Thanks, but it looks like plastic.... So what do I do let it look more metallic if I choose the metal-version?

Ok... I did it without your help. Am I really that bad that I'm not worth some answers? The shovel looks good for me now.

I poo on all those who read this thread and didn't answer.

Ok, I'll give you one last chance. I got another question for that pic. I made two sketches how it could look. I like the one with the fat one the most. But the guy's supposed not to know that he's bout to be eaten. That would be more realistic if he stands in a wide open mouth.

POST!!!

I think that the word you are looking for is not "mimics," but "expression."

the guy looks cool although he's more like:"go the hell outa here!"
maybe you should also change the strange construction - helmet/flashlight (btw the strap of the lamp should cast a shadow onto the helmet's curve as it's obviously not supposed to be a cube

the showel is perfect - looks like our's in the garden hut next to my house

#1 and #2 both look pretty good as for composition. But, i Think it would work out a whole lot better if you turned the guy around. It doesn't make sense to have him face outward.... unless he just came out of the guys mouth... but then of course .... yah that would defeat the squinting purpose. Keep in mind that you can be very flexible. Perhaps his blinding himself with his own light if he's facing inwards....perhaps he has broken glasses...... wheeeee.
