A colored sketch I did using an all new technique. Not sure if I like it yet, but who cares. This is a character I've been working on lately, an old man who loves butterflies but hates everyone else. The reason why is a mystery to everyone (I know why, but not telling yet).
What do you think?

Isric your characters are odd and wonderfull and the same time. What is this new technique? please explain it to me. The one thing that bothers me about the pic is that white kinda washed out look i presume is being emitted from the little light thingy that looks like a chile pepper.

Good stuff

come on, tell me why!!!

man, i love your style. it reminds me of really good children's book art. dont take that the wrong way, it's just got a feeling that it is full of life and motion.

i really like the color palette on this as well, the pastels really work and stand out from the browns.

thanks for posting this image

The picture can stand on it's too feet allready now. Are you gonna work more on it?
Tell us more about the technique you used.

the new technique was, instead of the usual traditional painting techniques I:
-Made the lines into their own 'multiplyed layer
-The real difference is that i used a gradient to color most of it and only hinted at the color on the figure

Thank you very much for your comments guys.
I understand the 'childrens book' idea and I think thats great.
Now I try to use the Jim Henson character method. Decide everything about the character first. Who it is, why it does what it does, interesting quirks, THEN start designing.
Any other opinions?

i agree with the earlier statement about the white seeming like it washes out the image too much. if that white glare is on its own layer, try setting it to color dodge, to make it a bit more contrasty.

you gonna tell us why he likes butterflies only??

Really nice isric!

I should really think about that stuff when coming up with a character instead of just doddling stuff out and go as i draw.

anyways good work man!

Good but it looks washed out. The way you did the lighting just affectively decreased the contrast which makes it harder to see.

This type of lighting could only represent light hitting dust in the air or bouncing off the eyeball or something.

If you were going for a "dusty" effect then good start but needs more work.

Woa now, don't get carried away!
Here's a version *slightly* contrasted. Compared together this one looks much nicer.
I know it's not enough, but I tried every other combination and this is the best it got.

Loving it

very nicely done, you are getting stupidly good my friend!

about the lighting, I think you should either make the guy darker where he's facing us and not getting the light. or go with some volumetric style lighting. although if you had the light streaming through the window and catching all the dust particles etc. then you would have to work it into your composition. I think it's working ok as is, but the light could work better with some re-working.

beautiful as always, but guess what? i like the first non-contrasty one better. it maybe has something to do with your wonderful linework showing better in that one or something...
but awesome character anyway.

Isric, you are developing some special feel to most of your pics and i like it a lot. Something mystical/magical, the feeling I used to have as a child when listening to fairy-tales like "Peterchens Mondfahrt" ("Little Peters trip to the moon" maybe in english). I guess you'd like to hear some crits, too. Sorry I don't have none right now...
Late Merry X-mas though, and a happy new year; I'll be off to france now...ahhhhh...

i think the best thing is the drawing, because without a drawing, whats there to colour, i really like it though. i dunno what it is about it, its appealing. How did you learn to draw like that? its MAD!

You should continue to use this coloring technique, it's really good. Very humble picture.
