Hey, have you seen the hair tutorial Enayla did recently? It's easy to follow and the basic technique can be applied to the beard, try it out, it should help you out a lot.
You're off to a good start, obviously you're new to things so the quality isn't as good as most people would prefer it to be. But that comes with time and practice. Keep working at it, no matter what other people may say, I see a lot of potential in you.
Don't forget to update this thread when you finish the hair/beard, and have a merry Christmas :P |

Wow Wicked, SporQ is very right about the improvement on the beard. I think that if you keep working at it a little bit you can STILL improve quite a bit.
For one thing you might want to try and throw in a tiny bit of color, just one shade or something... just the slightest tint so that it's not so greyed out, I think it might make the beard look more interesting.
You should also maybe think about giving the beard a little more shape. Perhaps giving it a little bit of curl rather than keeping all the hair so straight?
I am not sure what kind of look you are going for with this image, but if you're going for realism you might want to try and work out those sketchy lines. However, if you're going for a more cartoony look, try darkening the lines and cleaning them up to give them more of an inked look.
You should also give santa some shoulders, he's decapitated! EEEP!
Keep working at this one, I would love to see how you improve it! Hope this was helpful.

Oh yeah that's always a problem - I never know really if people aim to sth cartoony or not regarding this pic as a borderline case.
(not meant as criticism).

I've been around Solitaire, just not posting as much as usual. Been checking the forum pretty much everyday but sometimes I don't have time to respond. I got a wacom for Christmas (BIG YAY!!) so hopefully I can do a nifty piece of artwork soon! =) Maybe the trooper girl?? Hehehe. :>
Oki, on to Wicked! (sorry wicked )
Well Wicked, right now Santa is just a floating head. There's no real background or light source or anything, which is what makes me think he is supposed to be more cartoony-like. However, if you're going for realism, please read further
Check out this Santa image I pulled up. He's got that whole warm cozy Santa glow around him. His cheeks are nice and rosy, he's got a huge smile on his face (big round cheekbones, wrinkles around the eyes and forehead, big grinning mouth ) The warm light around him lightly reflects off his beard making it a little golden in places, I think this makes him look more warm and jolly
Hmmm... I hope this helps you a little bit more. If it were me I would definitely put in a background and give him a neck and some shoulders =)
Keep up the good work! :>
