yay, i'll be the first one to reply.
the only school i went to was elementary school and jr high, barely managed to get through those.
art schools are so amazingly overrated, you don't need those. i didn't. but then again, i also learned that doing 2d, 3d, texture, print and video for living sucks ass.
avoid art schools at all costs.

i started with 3d studio release 4 and ms paint (not max, but release 4) when i was what.. 13? i'm 18 now.
been using photoshop on daily basis (got no other life) for ~3+ years.
and as for the pic, don't use inner bevel, and if it's a first piece, it's almost acceptable for what it is. it's not good either by no means, worry not. keep practicing. alot.
hint: steer away from books and tutorials, it's much more rewarding to try and test and figure out things by yourself. 's what i did.
i take pride in the fact that i have never read a book or a tutorial 'bout digital graphics with the motive of learning something out of them.
[edit, i could be wrong on years. i do remember that i've spent most of my New Life(tm) with graphics crap.)

If that's your first pic, it's a lot better what I did back then. I couldn't do even THAT now, not without my penpad. If I would be forced to use mouse, I couldn't do jack's shit. Not that I can do much more now, either.
Anyway, I am 20 now, and I started doing graphics at the age of 16, so, it doesn't neccesarily take much time. I never took any tutorials or classes, for the reason that I wanted to figure out my OWN style and to do things my OWN way.
Now, since I have already done that, I am going to take few classes at few things. It never helps to be stubborn and refuse to learn anything from others.
