I'd get one if they'd make one that's exactly like my current logitech mouse. No stupid roll-thingy and bigger than most mice. Fits like a glove.

ive had absolutly no problems with my intellimouse. neither have any of my friends that have it. maybe im lucky. i dunno

my microsoft intellieye died on me last week.
so i opened it up and took a look inside.

through normal use the plastic body of the mouse pinched through the cable fraying or cutting most of the wires. to fix it, i had to bore out a wider opening, cut off all the internal plastics bits (that were in contact with cable), and then reconnected the wires. my cord is a bit shorter, but at least it works now.

microsoft designed the mouse to self-destruct

I got an intellimouse explorer a couple weeks ago to replace a crappy New ball mouse I got. I got the thing home and tried it out for a few days and it worked fine... but then it just stopped working. The connection frayed. Wonderful two mice I had to take back.. anyway. I got ANOTHER Intellimouse Explorer, Just cause it had the 5 year warrenty so it wasn't my problem if it kept fraying.

anyway. I'm sitting here and my mouse is jumping all over the screen. I try to figure out what's wrong with it and I turn it over to look at the LED. A HAIR lodged itself into the path of the lightbeam causing erratic movement.

Never clean your mouse again my ass.

hehe you all crazy..
First of all why explorer? It's huge, has too many buttons, and costs more. WheelMouse optical is where its at =] Same design as my old ball mouse.
One thing that i didnt like is how you cant make fast 360-degree turns in FPS games :p
In that case ball mice save lives!!
And its less or about the same precision as ball mouse. But i live with it cause ball mouse got stuck both vertical and horizontal ways all the time, which got me killed in games hehe.

Ha ha, I'm mostly joking. It's true though It did fray and I did have to dig a hair out of it but I'm not all pissed off. I didn't get a logitech because four out of Five people I know who have logitech mice have broken buttons that either half work or don't work at all. And I didn't want to get the MS one either but it was the only thing in stock at the nearest computer store and I didn't feel like Plodding across the city for a stupid mouse.

My favorite mouse EVER is that original Mac mouse. the boxy one with the square button in the middle. Whoever invented "ergonomic" mice needs a kick in the head because other than the mice that come packed with the mac (even the stupid puck) Mice cause my hand to cramp.

But it's hard to play UT and ONI and stuff with one button.

OH and FaithInChaos that's EXACTLY what happened to my last explorer. But there's a five year warrenty. So I figure MS can just keep shipping me new mice.

Right i've got an intelli mouse as well and I had the same problem (mouse jumping all over screen)
Since the mouse is basicly a laser it works well on a shiney surface or something like a peice of cardboard a ruff texture.
But Don't use a Mouse mat they basicly just f0rk it up...

p.s. Move the mouse to fast and it well jump over the screen .. Shame for people with low sens when playing quake

Yep. The optical mouse does rock. I use it as a flashlight sometimes.

And the hair-over-the-lens is a problem, but, come on. All it takes to clean it is a quick puff of breath.

Much easier than cleaning the crap out of the rollers with q-tips for 20 minutes straight.

And this thing ROCKS in Photoshop.

My wheel mouse Optical is the greatest. I agree that you can't do the fast spin around, but hey! I can finally hit a target without my mouse jumping all over the screen! Cheers to the lasers!

i got one of those, its been working fine. I think it has somethign to do with your mouse pad.

Uh... just to clear this up. To anyone who's trying to "solve" my problem. there isn't one to solve. The Hair over the light WAS the problem. Removing the hair SOLVED the problem.

Thank you very much for your suggestions though.

Here's a question for any tech geeks out there. Why are all the optical mice Red lights? How come I can't have a Green lighted mouse to festively compliment my evil eyed Red one?

Ther's a lil' photoelement that needs any light to sence, so put some other color diode in there and BAM! grin or yello lite.

PS: you need some special diaode i would think, cause if its too weak itll burn up
..and ill be catching yer bums l8er...

Oooooh. thank you scientific American. I can now hazard a guess as to why it's red light in these mice. Red LEDs are much more efficient and cheaper to produce than other colors of LEDs. YAY!

I second (or third by now) the people suggesting the Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse. Runs like a champ and built pretty tough. BTW, its got a red LED, not a blue one. Works fine on a Mac too if you have a USB port. The mouseware/driver software is works well and allows you to customize all the buttons for each app. Works great on the carpet too. (don't ask

a sheet of paper attached to the table with some tape works fine for a optical mouse "mousepad". they tend to get dirty quick though and those dirty spots cause some weird hopping, so either replace every week or get something matte. i use a velour surface folder thingy, works like a charm. reflective surfaces cause all sorts of funky movement. as do dented surfaces. if you're going to use a normal mousepad, i'd recommend one with a diagonal gradient or something, single color ones didn't work too well with me.

I was playing games alot when I got my intelli mouse. I soon opted for the Boomslang because the optic mouse couldn't keep up. The screwy thing about the optic mouse is it will try and compensate and usually over shoots what you were trying to do.. that is what will cost you a deathmatch.

Jumping circle strafe.. not good on the optic. I'm pretty good, so I get pissed over faulty equipment. The boomslang is faster than me and the precision is just deadly.

if you can get the microsoft one for almost free, then you might want to go for it. but there have been maybe reports that they die out and are not as comfortable as the logitech (i have owned a microsoft optical and both of these things are true to me). if you can shell out the extra money, get the logitech, it is much better. and the blue light on top of the mouse is also very cool to have. call me a geek but i like for my mouses to look cool.

bugscratch: it doesn't have a blue LED, but on the top of the mouse it has an illuminated blue logtich logo. which looks very cool, especially in the dark. yay

Bradford: OK then I was mistaken. I didn't know, I had just heard people raving about the cool blue light and assumed that they were talking about the LED.
Does it look REALLY cool ? Because I'll soon be buying a new mouse and I could get a Microsoft intellimouse explorer for practically free, but I really like blue light, so that might lead me to get the Logitech one.....
