After Spending a good 3 hours on trying to do some hair I gave up. Let me know what you think. (Hopefully I get this UBB code right too )

And here is the simple drawing I did on some notebook paper about 5 months ago that I used as my reference (the actual image is quite small...the horizontal lines are from the notebook paper)

Don't be too hard on me after all I am a programmer

Looks a little bit like Lara Croft.
I'd say you use more red colors to give the skin a more realistic feel. It's too yellowish.

Also the eyes are a good start, give them more details.

Her ears are very small. You need to get more going on in the pic color wise, and you need some lighting to provide shading/contrast. Pick a light direction, a light color, and start building the shapes. Start by blocking in important landmarks like the nose, cheeks, eye lids, and then keep working from there to render the various sides of each shape in the face. FEEL the shape as you paint it.

DirtyDagger: There is nothing more terrible than working on something like crazy for many hour and then when you show it to someone they say. Nice sketch now you can start really working on it so im not going to comment much.

Left ear is to small and weird.
Eyes look lifeless, eyebrows look way too straight and smooth.
The skin look too white (vampire look) so add some color. So here was my 2cents :P

if you are going for realism, then some thins are not working... if you are seeking some level of abstraction, youve got it. i dunno hat your main thrust and goals in art are, but if you want to do portrait style stuff, study anatomy and portrait drawing (obvious, eh?) study things like the eye shape and lip shape. if that is your first ever portrait, be glad that you have it out of the way. i like to believe that all humans have a few thousand bad drawings in them. its nice to get them out of the way as soon as possible...and the only way to do that is to draw shitloads of pictures.

Tweek - Lara Croft was not my intention hehe. The yellowness of the skin is probably due to my love of asian women

As for realism versus abstract...not looking for a job in art really. There's no way I can compete with the likes of the talent on this board. Besides I do alright in my little technology niche. So, I mainly do it for fun. But my main focus is it looking good, not necessarily 'anatomically correct'.

Thanks for input on the coloring. Had a hard time doing it as this is my first photoshop 'painting' ever and I wasted much time on trying everything under the sun for it not to look 'splotchy'. I've been doodling and pencil sketching on paper since I was little but this is my first real computer drawing.

Can anyone give me any hints on hair?

Thanks all for your comments!

Sorry DirkDiggler, I guess you're not aware of my random panic attacks that make me write such nonsense. Don't be frightened or sad if I write stuff that may seem evil, it happens to me every so often, it may be to you or anybody else sometimes..

Hey Dirk!
Well done for a first post!
(Hair can be quite a pain, heehee! )
Hmmm... I think you might want to start with bigger brushes to set up the general light & dark areas before going to the smaller brushes.
But maybe that's just your style, if so, just ignore me.
Also, I would highly recommend trying out some human anatomy tutorials so you'll at least have a decent idea of where to put the facial features such as the eyes and such.
I think I can sum this post up by simply saying: Keep it up and practice! Practice! Practice!
