Hey there people,
finally more or less a finished image from me this time. It's geavily influenced by the work I did on the other images on the "Weapons Trial" post.
Anyway, here's the stranded space crew:
BTW, thanks for all your help with crits on the previous posts!
Cheers, A.

So this was a crew of females? Hmm... I wonder what kind of stuff they have in that ship ...
And the ship is still in the air ... not really as stranded as they could be.
Looks cool though. The fire from the gun looks a little odd, and it's hard to place where the ship or the creatures (?) on the right are since the left side and middle of the image appears to be fogged, but the ship appears to be extremely close (so quite small) and the right appears to be almost infront of the two chicks (if it werent for the muzzle flash) as neither seem to be as fogged as they should be.

Wow, awesome picture! I really like the cyan lighting that is given off, these science fiction pictures always get me going. One thing I think would be cool, however, would be too give off more lighting from the -machine gun (or you have a correct name for it?

That gun has one hell of a kick huh?
I like the style, do you scan this work in or do it all on the puter? Its quite rare to find paintings like this, 3D seems to suck all the science fiction fans right up and never lets go.
Nice work, I agree with the comment about the gun needing more light but work seems finished and it works just fine as it is.

really nice job on the lighting, but as far as composition goes.. you should give some more insight on who they are firing? doens't have to be a complete image, maybe just a silloheute.. The ship should still be on the ground if they are stranded.. And the ship itself looks a bit flat, but you did a great job on the trees and a great job of setting a dark and eery mood..
Hope to see some more stuff from you |

Hey man I like the characters and the background especially the enviroment..but you need to paint over your line art it really takes away from the pic when the rest of your picture is painted ..know what I mean? This pic could be way tight if you spent a little more time on it. Right now I would call this loose. Good work post more stuff. |

Thanks guys for your comments;
point taken about the muzzle flash. When I think about it I can remember times at night in my army training when the only illumination was the strobe-like flash of machineguns - and that lit up a huge area!
MilkMan: Good point about the linework. I'm slowly trying to move away from a linework "pen and ink" style, to a more "brush and paint" style. It's a difficult process for someone who cannot go anywhere without a pair of art pens.....
Garry Lacey: The crew are drawn on A4 paper in ink, then scanned, rescaled, and pasted in as "multiply" layers in PhotoShop. I find it's much easier for me to get the proportions right that way. Here's
the scan before coloring of the rifle-wielding crew-woman....
Hope that helps...and I like your 2D/3D comment, I worked at a games company for years and all the 3D stuff never really turned me on..... |

hey. thats pretty neat. Some suggestions though..
You should pay more attention to getting the scene to work as a whole. Right now I think theres too much of seperate obejcts feeling to this piece. The perpective is off, leaving the background in a very 2d'ish looking. also the spaceship is not 'placed' in the picture, if you know what I mean... The ship could maybe be shown in a little more interesting angle than what you have now. Last thing... I may be wrong. But doesn't muzzle fire like you've painted it here only occur when you're using blank ammo??? Please correct me if I'm wrong. very last last thing The sketch is looking very sweet indeed. Very controlled. Would be nice to see the same degree of controlness in you painting... Keep it up, it looks very promising.

hahah! You can set things on fire with that gun!
:)
It's a bit weird how the front gal is shooting at something so eagerly, and the one behind her is just kind of THERE.. doing her thing with a radar heh. nice

I like the ship. It reminds me of Samus Aran's ship in Super Metroid, except in a side view here. Cool setting they are in. |

Thanks guys.
BoomStick: The muzzle flash here is a direct
result of the four slots cut into the flash
supressor/ muzzle brake. In fact, you'll
generally only see this when NOT firing
blank ammo. With blanks, you need a special
blank firing attachment (BFA) on the muzzle
to restrict gas flow to create enough back-
pressure to cycle the action and get automatic fire.
Maybe we need an "assault weapons" thread in
random musings fo this..
Cheers, A. |
