Hello,
Well I finally decided to take the plunge into digital illustration. Now even though my drawings skills are ok, this whole way of thinking is new to me.
Anyway, I have this drawing:
I tried following spooge's suit tutorial, but I don't think I'm getting it:
snipped to protect the innocent!
I'd appreciate any friendly pointers as i have no idea what I'm doing. I decided to learn this for a project and my deadline is getting too near.
Oh, here's another drawing I think is kind of interesting, those in SF might recognize the model:

this is what I think, I think you're trying to use big brushes, to shade instead of using smaller brushes, and creating multiple strokes... but hey, I don't paint, I draw cartoons... but yeah, it looks good =] keep it up, you're off to a great start =D
[addition]
your drawings are incredible though, you have the talent, it's good to have another added to this vault of talent. =D

Very nice drawings!!!, you seem to have that part covered pretty well
A little advice for colouring:
Try using the paintbrush, not the airbrush, for shading. It's easier to achieve a more realistic look using hard edged brushes with varying opacity. The airbrush tends to make images look blurry.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try using smaller, hard edged brushes and making smaller strokes.
How do you guys go about selecting the colors though, do you mix'em, swatch'em, etc? |

I really like the second one. It would be a fantastic pic if it was colored... or least given some more shading to bold it up some. Again I really like what you have done there.

about the brush size, i think starting with a big brush is good, and after you have all the areas blocked in, switch to a smaller one.
..hard-edged paintbrush yep
and yeah the drawings rock :)

The drawings are very nice indeed, .. are you certain they are yours? How can someone draw so well, yet have a complete lack of control over color, and form when it comes to coloring? Anyway... don't mind me. |

I was pretty much thinking the same as Frost.
Are they from figure drawing acts? or from photos.

your line drawings look great (those on your site too)!
..but you have some poblems when it comes to color and light it seems. I understand that frost suspects that those are not from the same artists because of that.
I liked Michael Ende's stuff too btw

the drawings rock! but colouring really needs p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e, unfortunately. (One took me 6-8 hours on the damned mouse)
scan your images in under really high resolution and use small brushes...
good luck

He, good references to the Never Ending Story, if you haven't read the book it's a must. The first movie is the first half of the book, the second movie is a warped version of the second half of the book. In exactly the center of both halves (the part left out in both movies, or were there three?) is the explanation _why_ it's called the never ending story (they kinda left that little detail out didn't they!).
Anyway, I'll give it a go tonight and tomorrow morning before work and I'll post again. It's wonderful having a forum of talented artists, full of passion and different opinions. |

I'm so jealous of your drawings Atreyu.. you have a great delicate sense of line. I checked out your figure drawings on your site, quite beautiful
About the coloring, I think he has a good sense of it traditionally, check out "Figure Sanguine 2 (close)" =)
Good work =)

Hello,
Thanks all for replying, I really appreciate it.
Frost: Yup, they're mine! I've been drawing in school for about a year, but I'm just taking color theory now. I really have no idea about color besides that. Also, these's are done in charcoal pencil, haven't touched computer illustration much (except 3D and graphic design).
Mikael: They're from models. Done on Newsprint 18x24.
Nex: thanks for your kind words. I have problems with color because the original drawings were done with the model and the light and dark are faint, and most of it made up (we didn't have the lighting set up). Then I got home and tried to do it again, but it ain't working. I'm feeling really frustrated because after all this work drawing I still am terrible at painting. I'm sure I'll learn fast though, I drew _terribly_ untill I started studying art a year ago.
Oh, and I'm a huge fan of Michael Ende!
Nightime: Also thanks for your kind words. I've been pretty much working on my line quality (it's nice to know it shows!), because I used to do my lines way too dark. The figure Sanguine was the first time I tried that, but again it's different when the model is in front of you.
I really appreciate everyone responding. I'll give it a second try tonight after I get home from work. The thing is I've never really worked with color and I'm an absolut child when it comes to that.
Also, my webpage hasn't been updated in months, when I get a chance I'll put up my new drawings.
BTW, I'm one of those people that was the worst in the class drawing untill I was about 14, then got a little better. But still winged it and decided to study art in the hopes of it being a learnable craft (although I did do engnieering for 2 years before deciding!).

Hello,
Well I started over with a much larger scan, used only hard edged brushes and worked alot smaller this time, kinda figuring out the big picture as I did the smaller.
Oh, I also added another quick character:
Here's without the lines:
Again I appreciate all the help I can get. I have to finish at least three drawings like this from a group of illustrations I have. The project is to illustrate a book more or less (some people chose comics).
If I can't make it work soon I'll have to abandon and go with pen and ink. Or a really nice line charcoal.
thnx
P.D: I did this with the mouse because I broke my pen getting out here to SF, and a new one from wacom is like 50 bucks! So I'm thinking of upgrading tablet or not, I was using my adb wacom with an iMate on a G4.

I felt I had to try to make something out of your picture. I was aiming for something similar to Spooge's oilhead. It was fun, though. I hope it's of some use.

Hello,
Wow Timo, that is absolutely awesome. Is that Painter? How long did it take you? Care to share any other tips?
I really appreciate you taking the time to paint that! I'm scrutinizing it as we speak to get some ideas.
thnx |

OK, got to working on it some more. Interesting thing, I plugged in my tablet just to see if my broken pen would work and it did!
It's broken down the middle (well now it's taped up) and the only thing that doesn't work is the eraser and the top of the two middle buttons.
OK, here goes, all help very much appreciated:

I used Photoshop and the tool was paintbrush. It took about 1 hour. I'll write more when I come from school.
