I've been trying to spare 30-60 minutes or so at the end of every day to do some sort of painting exercise. Generally they're not worth showing but this one came out ok;
The exercise here was just to copy a face from a leaflet in front of me (to get some practice in drawing faces so that my no-reference ones turn out better) and I wasn't worrying about trying to get a likeness. (although it came out close anyway)
Anyone able to guess who it was, and bonus points if you can tell where from?
Don't worry about crits, there's lots wrong with it.

nice portrait sumaleth! he's not a 100% george clooney, but he's recognizable.. and i really like the job you did on his skin- solid tones, solid contrast.. as a matter of fact, i'm not even disturbed by the lack of a background- this greyish tone works fine for me. |

Hmm, that wasn't as hard to guess as I thought it would be. That's a good thing probably.
I seem to have a lot of trouble making eyes look right. The eyes here are really the only thing that bothers me seeing it today, and the problem with them looks to be the same one I had with the self portrait I did a while back. Something to work on.

It does look a little like the love child of Jonathan Frakes and George Clooney (I'd hate to watch that wrestling match), but the skin tones are great.
Only criticism I have is that either the nose is pointed a little to his left... no, maybe it's placed on the face a little too far to his right. It sort of looks like his nose and mouth are shifted slightly to his right with respect to his eyes and top of his head. I don't think I'm being really clear, but do you see what I mean?

His mouth is pulling to his right, his nose is too long, thus throwing his lower face out of wack. His nose might be just a hair too far to his left as well. I definately thought "CLooney" when I saw it, but his lower face is just starting to be sucked into the fake Necronomicon. :] Good job in the rendering though! Getting a likeness isn't easy.

Thanks for the comments everyone, and you're right, there are tons of little things I could move around to get it looking more like the Cloonster.
But, as mentioned, the exercise was to just render a face and hopefully learn where all the bumps and surfaces are. Making it look like the original character wasn't part of the aim just because of the tight deadline I imposed on myself (it's hard enough to get it looking like a face in an hour ).
Even so, the eyes still don't look correct to me today. I think maybe they're too big.

Anthony;
I think you're well on the way there, you've got proportions and shapes looking quite good with the exception of the ear which doesn't look correct.
As for the spooge-portrait style, i really can't offer any help in that area. I have on several occations tried to do faces in that style and they always just end up looking like a mess. I suspect that to be able to pull one of those off you need to know the structure and planes of the face -really- well to begin with.
I'm also not totally sure that style is suited to this face. This one looks like it would benefit more from a Fallen style (don't have his web page but he used to post a lot of pics on this forum), or if you did want to go a little bit stylized then something like Micke (http://www.katode.org/noguchi/) or Joachim (http://home.online.no/%7Ej-barrum/) would be good to look at.
I think the main problem with the shading is that there doesn't appear to be a clear light source direction, there looks like there might be 4 or more. Without seeing the reference image it's difficult to know whether you're on the right track and just need to keep refining, or whether it would be better to fall back to a single main light source and perhaps a secondary fill lightsource to provide an edge of the far side.
Also, keep in mind that it's often a good idea to give each light in a scene a slightly different hue/color. ie. back-lights are often given a cool color while the main one is a warm hue.
The big patch of grey lighting around the eye looks out of place with the rest of the highlighting.
Also, the bottom edge of the jaw needs to look a little bit more rounded towards the bottom I think, it looks a little unnatural atm.
Finally, it'd be nice to get some more color variation into the skin. For example, the nose is usually tinted slightly more red/pink than the rest of the face because the blood vessels are much closer to the surface there.
Anyway, that'll give you some stuff to think about.
