Another self-portrait
(I'm not self-centered, I just got no one else to paint )

original size

There are probably oddities, but I've been looking at it for too long to see them. Critiques would be appreciated.

Justin... you rule. Been looking at your stuff for quite some time, and doesn't seize to amaze me. Your truly gifted. Judging from your pics your fairly young, which makes it that much more impressive. Only thing I 'see' is the nose is a nudge too big, and the ear is a bit mishapen and too far to the back of your head. Also the eyes are a bit too close and the eye on the right is a bit higher and bigger than the left.

Regardless, awesome skill you have. Even though I love looking at your mug, I wish I'd see something else out of you!

Ignore me at will

You are truly a master of portraits. The eyebrowns are very done very delicate, you can almost feel them.. I love the way you've captured the light shining through your iris, That is really the final touch of this incredible piece of work. I've seen your previous portraits they are all rock solid. I think your portraits are the best I've seen in this forum, and many people have tried..
Question: Did you use a photo reference for this one?

As Liquid says - we want to see something more out of you! Not more bodyparts, though.. Keep up the good work!

Look where the brow ridges meet, can you see how odd it looks?.

Otherwise FUCK ME GENTLY!! thats amazing, I kid you not!, from how old you look you could be an up 'n' coming Spooge!.
The realism is astounding, especially on where the light hits your face.

AWESOME work, that looks incredible. The lighting adds so much to the piece and everything in the image looks like you could reach out and touch it...I'll have to go back and look at some of your other portraits as they seem to be as good as mentioned above. Keep up the good work.

yikes! thank you, guys (and gal).

For the record, I look a little younger than I am -- 19.

I know, I need to paint something else. I plan on doing something from my imagination next time.

Liquid! - all duly noted (though I do have a large proboscis). I'm a big fan of your work, by the way

Kjetil thanks. I did use a photo ref, though I took the picture myself (I feel dirty using others' photos).

Ah Crap,

This kind of stuff should not be posted on the forum. It only damages the self-esteem of us older guys who would cut off our good drawing hand to come up with a painting like that.

seriously,Really awesome stuff. The color and use of light are incredible. look at that freaking eye, crap. Are you in art school up in NY?

That is very cool. The thought quickly passed htrough my head, why do I even bother to draw. However, you have only inspired me to do better. Do you paint traditionally as well? Thanks for posting such awsome artwork.

Gorgeous!

What I'm most fond of in this picture is his left eye... it's got such life in it, it makes me think I'm looking at a real life eye. As a matter of fact, that eye alone looks more alive than the rest of the image.

What I'm least fond of is the bridge of his nose, right above where the eyebrow ridges should meet... it looks... odd. But anyway... this is way much better than anything I could produce

Keep up the good work!

sheesh, thank you again. I hadn't been doing much artwork for a while (other than mouse-based graphics work for websites), until I came across this forum a few months back and it helped inspire me to start up again. I guess I should keep at it.

Nex - blasphemy! I don't even deserve to be mentioned in the same thread as spooge!

shwinn - no, I'm not in school right now. Going to RIT next Fall, for New Media/Information Technology.

agent44 - I do a little painting traditionally (watercolor and oil), and a lot of drawing (esp. figure drawing). Digital is my medium of choice for doing non-sketchy works.

Enayla - glad you like the eye; it was my intention for it to be the focus of the painting. I'll try and fix the oddity between the eyes.

micke - it took about 5-6 hours, divided into two sessions. I'll probably do some more to it once I can 'see' it again.

Wow! Amazing portrait painting! It looks almost like a 3D rendering. It feels so demensional...

Thanx guys for pumping this thread up...almost missed it again. I wish there was a way for people who are reading to "tag" cool threads. The thread will still be pumped down according to time/date, but the tag will stay. This will make "quicky" browsing a lot easier. Anyways...just a thought.

Good work Justin..
