Here's a larger version (800x800):- http://www.cee.hw.ac.uk/~ceenda/character_concept_1_fullsize.jpg

I was kinda bored today, so I decided to do some concept sketches for a character that I was thinking about putting in a short story / narrative.

I've still not had an opportunity to do any life drawing or anatomy classes yet, so any crits would be really helpful.

Oh, this character is not one of the good guys, but I think you probably guessed that.

Hey Ceenda old buddy

I don't see that much of a problem with the anatomy.
but I'm not sure what sort of look your going for. your using a lot of black, sort of a cross between line art and fully painted. I really liked the sort of style you used in that rembrandt (sp) portrait. there was a good contrast between the exelent shading and crisp shaddows. I don't think the colours are working as well in this pic. but again I'm not sure what you're after. the black your using isn't really working with the skin tones IMHO. it's ending up dirty.
I did a little redo. it looks nothing like your character (I'm hopeless at getting a likeness ) but I've been having a look at the great masters a bit lately and its interesting how they handle the colour. I don't really know that much about it but I would recomend having a look at how they used colour and value to describe skin etc.
Then again you might be wanting the look you've got and I'm just blabing without reason

hehe I didn't manage to get the cool expression your character had. He's had too much of something .

Sure looks mean, and the shading's great! The lit half of the face looks a little wider than the other, but It's not obvious and probably doesn't matter much anyway :).

Rinaldo is right about the colors. nice repaint as well.

(#1)
he looks like he's going to say something

i like it. he also looks like the type that kills small furry creatures. i think if you're going for a semi-realistic look, stick with you lighting, outlines, etc. anatomy looks very good, and it all seems to fit together. i would try some alternate tones on his face, take for example the nose on rinaldo's version.

I like it very much but also agree with Rinaldo on this color usage thing. Anatomy is looking quite good to me, only his right eye(the one in the shadow) is little strangely lit on the corner. You could also add some sparkle into his eyes.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Rinaldo: I like your version alot, it has a milder and more thoughtful look about it. I've been looking at alot of the portraits by Rembrandt recently. This sketch was basically a comic like sketch but I'll try to do some more realistic concept sketches sometime. It's great to see more of your stuff posted here thesedays.

Gecko: Cheers!

Flexible Elf: lol! What kind of shows do you go to???

EvilToYLeT: Thanks!

Nova: Cheers for the comments Nova, I'll try doing some more realistic portraits soon.

Rhomb: Good point about the shadows, thankyou.

BTW - Now that I think of it, does the sketch remind anyone of Mark Hamill?

Looks pretty good, I'd like to see a 3/4-view of that (not flat from the front, i mean). Only his cheeks on the lit side look very dark. Then again, he IS one of the dark guys...

Hey man. Cool pic. Though i'm not too thrilled about the concept. He seems like a comic book character i've seen before...the name of the comic illudes me.
