Anyone know how how do add a quick fire effect to this? Coming up from the bottom? I've been reading up on the posts about fire (remember that great thread about the mounted knight one a week or so ago?) some great advice there. I've tried a few things but it all comes out looking pretty wrong. I think I might just be tired tonight, so I'm going to leave it as is for the moment and maybe gather my strength later and get those flames in. That was sort of the whole idea I had when I started this guy. Oh well.
Tell me what you think? Add?

no idea for the fire, sorry, I tried but haven't succeed yet...
The perspective is very well chosen; the whole composition gets a very dramatic feel.. |

"Nice" pic? Smegging excellent pic. It'll look great once you can work out fire. |

Eyecandy fire filter! Haha... ok anyway, honestly, I have no idea. Just look back at pierres finished knight painting and just observe how he did his fire... sorry, best advice I could offer. |

um fire... it really depends on how much you want to cheat.
If you create a new layer with a black background, you can draw a white line for the base of the flame, grausian blur it, turn it on it's side and run two or three wind filters on it, and then a ripple. Then turn it rightside up again and run another ripple on it.
Then you can change the mode to color table, then set color table to red body, then back to your usual and you have a nice line of flames.
Here's one I whipped together, it takes 30 seconds, but you can refine it yourself, make your own algorithim and whatnot, but like I said, it's kindof cheating, but like you say, It's fast...

If the flames are too high, one can use the paint bucket set to the background color and it'll wipe out the outer areas of flame.
If you do that (though I don't think you will) you can, of course, adjust the contrast etc to get it to match up with your pic, but it's really hard to try to paint the grayscale yourself, So that's why indexed color works well.
There are a lot of different ways to cheat at flames.

Well I slept well last night. Feel rested. Too bad I didn't wake with any supernatural "NOW I CAN DRAW FIRE" ablilty. Tsk, and I was so hoping...
Thank you for the feedback so far everyone!
Loukus: Thank you for the advice and examples. That's a wonderful way of getting the range of yellow/orange/red in flame, which is so hard to do otherwise. The only problem I found with that is it ends up looking a bit tacked on as a layer, you can understand that it's something in the foregroud, where in this pic 360' are needed somewhat. Ack, I wasen't too smart laying this one out.
surferboi: Nice work! I like the waves in the flames, that's something I had not thought about but it gives the fire more life! Nice! Thank you for the rework, inspired me to give it another go.
Sa'ge: You are 100% right about the perspective. (What was I thinking?), it's a nightmare for fire, you are sort of in the flame looking out, that can't be easy as a subject to draw. I love your idea about adding a cool colored background to enhance the feeling of the flame. I've tried adding different color to this sea of orange and find it everytime to just look "odd", everything seems to clash, I tried a few different shades of orange and yellow as the background and it ended up too uniform, ug, I'm sure there is a way to do it, and it would make things look, SO much better. Oh well, great advice though, I'll do that in the future.
This is my latest attempt. Flames are better that what I was seeing last night but.........blah. I think the creature needs some kind of shimmering blur to make things work but when I try all I get is blur minus the shimmer. Opinions? Comments? Suggestions? Objections? Corrections? We take all comers here in the Tiger's Lair.

just one quick thought on the area of his left hand swoopin down...the flames don't look as realistic since they don't really overlap the hand. Now you don't need to complete cover the hand, just a nice touch of a strand of flame blazing over it would do great. |

well i think sa'ge is kinda on the right track with the idea about the background and suggesting fire... i had a bad time tryin to match up the perspective with the fire... i think if u were looking at the creature from the point of view u used, and the way i drew the fire, you would be standing inside the fire. But oh well this is just a shot i took mighta spent a half hour or so on it (lost track of time) the fire still could use a lot more detailing. |

I'd agree with the above method, but just forit's own sake here's another method of cheating, making layers of tis might get an acceptable effect...

ImageOmega: Hmmm, that was a good idea. I've modified that. I need to work on realizing where and when I should overlap, it really helps when trying for a 3d look. Thanks for the tip friend!

I don't think it was a good idea to make the WHOLE THING orange. Makes it tough to focus on. Hard to tell what's going on. I think you should start by coloring in everything in its normal colors, and then add a strong orange/yellow glow/reflection all over it. It'll give everything more depth and make it easier to look at. |

I dunno--I kinda like the way everything seems to be glowing with heat--coloring everything in it's true shade, then adding highlights is a great way to do it, but I think this tactic has it's merit as well-fire is hard to look at, after all |

Tinusch: I know what you mean about the orange. I have a problem with getting way, way, way too focused on a single color. If you look at any other of my posts you will see that, green, purple, orange. Maybe this is my way of keeping things simple and I will graduate to "more than one color" some day! Here's hoping!
Irulann: Thanks! I think it's got a hot look or at least warm.....err....luke warm? If you think it's hard to look at the post, try to imagine working on it, up close and personal for a while.
I'm glad no one has trashed the fire yet. I was expecting a BOP on the head and a "No, stupid, fire looks like this, get with the program. Duhhh...."
