i wanna be like others, and everyone else was making self portraits, so...
actually it was more like a practice on using color and shading stuff and using the paintbrush tool and whatnot. plus i cheated, i used a million or so layers and brightness/contrast once.
i dunno. i pulled it off pretty decent i think. i do look too young in it, but i guess that's just better. iot has alot of stuff that i could fix or adjust or improve, but i'm too sick of it already, it's taken one too many nights to draw (30+ hours total... up to you whether to laugh or cry) and with my limited drawing skills and patience level it's a god damn huge achievement that i got this far..
another problem is the skin tones. i gave up all the hope i ever had to get them right. let's just think i'm pale as fuck.
i used photo reference to draw the sketch on the right, though the photo was from a different angle (was facing almost straight to the camera) so the sketch was only used for proportions and primitive shapes and so forth. you know. artsy stuff.
(edit, i worked it in a higher rez. work rez version; http://www.outofideas.com/hoom/jussi/selfportrait_big_rez.jpg )
whatever. rip it apart.
(yes i had to cut the hair. if anyone remembers how caustic i was 'cause of that idiot hair dresser from hell ruining it.)

Wow, you drew each strand of hair! It creates a really good effect on the top of your hair.
Looks 80% photorealistic! |

That rocks. I like how you kept the pants really rough and sketchy but they still look realistic. Awesome job. |

well that's kinda true, if you like to think about it that. i haven't washed my hair in literally a month, so it's starting to look alot like i have rasta hair. the palette for the hair is pretty close to the truth as well, there's hints of purple amidst the blonde (instead of 100% light purple as it SHOULD be- along with 3 times longer hair. [bible of curse and mock and swearing here].
(and why is it that if i don't typo up like hell in the post itself, i have to screw up my signature no matter how hard i try?)

They way you drew each strand of hair makes it look very realistic. Like the pic a lot.

Really nice! Is the blue line sketch your underdrawing for the painting? Folds, proportions and highlights look great.
By the way, as far as I'm concerned, layers and brightness/contrast is not cheating. They're just more tools.

yeah, it's what i started with and drew on top of.
and as far as how i perceive the word "drawing", it's that, one canvas, one tool, and in that case, extra layers and image value adjusting tools = cheating. but fuck that- who cares? i like to cross over where the fence does not exist. well not 100% literally- in that case i've just posted a photo. :p

you don't remember? ARRRRH!
the story goes as this.
one day back then in the summer, faustgfx (get the spelling right, bizzach) had to have his sides and the back of his head shaven. being the lazy fucker that he is, he will not do that himself. then he suddenly wants bright purple hair. well, he called his own old hair dresser that he knows the dresser knows her stuff. well, faustgfx would have had to wait one day to get the time from his own hair dresser, he couldn't, because of work stuff, so he went to a hair dresser that he could have a time at right away.
well, go figure, the hair dresser was new to the stuff, and faustgfx was so tired and wasted at the moment he didn't realize what was going on when the hair dresser had bleached his hair for the FIFTH time and dyed TWICE. it comes out as very black purple.
well, in 2 days, most of the purple is gone, and it's grey. then it turns blonde. then orange areas start appearing. then it stays as blonde with purple in the root.
the hair was totally ruined. cutting it off was the only solution. =\
*sniff*

Shit, that's fantastic Faust - and thanks for linking to the full res, it's great to see the individual brushstrokes.
The pose is great too, - it gives it a good, moody feel.
This has definately got to be one of my favourites from you. The only criticism I have is that the pocket on the leg looks a bit outliney, it could just be the sketchy style, but it doesn't have the same solid feel as the rest of the picture.
Anyway, all criticism aside, I'm really impressed.

yeah i know the pants look pretty quick. i didn't do much about them as can be seen, i grew very sick of them very quick and didn't want to work on it anymore...
the pose.. well i rarely stand straight. make your own conclusions.

lisa, like i used to say, you have issues:)
pyro, actually it looks like me on a slow 2 am.. except i usually look way more slumped.
my impression on them breaking up was "whoa! good!" 'cause i think with battle of los angeles they took a wrong turn in their style, the album has 2 tracks i can listen to, the rest i strongly dislike.
the headphones are a part of me, i sleep with them around my neck. literally.

dunno about moody.
i guess it could be turned into that if i made a proper background and all that. now it's just only me, nothing else.
i thought about the background, but couldn't think about anything that would have worked well with it, so i just decided to fuck it. then there's the matter of EFFORT....

HALLELUJAH!
i'm on icq. it's you who disappeared again.
well that and i'm 24 hours a day at work.
nex- errr no? heh
it took alot of time to get it to it's current state, i don't want to touch it again. people like spooge here would draw that in half a fucking hour. it takes me half a week. literally. :p
and what comes to you liking the latter one more.. . . . errr. no. unless you have a thing for kid goth boys. not that i'm one. i don't like it that you like the way i look. i used to have black hair though. but then again, i also had DavidHasselhoff'sDark80's -hair a long time ago.
but which is worse, you liking the looks or lisa liking the looks? you i can understand, you're just crazy, but lisa? errrrr. she's like female and all. (i did get her admit that she's cute, though. live. voice.)
afjklagjlk. etc. i believe sometime in the future i will refine this drawing. add proper surroundings. fix the lighting so it's not from straight ahead like from a 3d studio max target directional.
then i'll get new clothes.

Well, right. But still you finally got there. And you will get faster, for sure. Even Spooge didn't do things fast from the start, I guess. I tried a self-portrait two days ago and totally f*cked up trying. I just didn't get it right. I'll try again though. You did an awesome job, no matter how long it took you.
And, BTW, I don't like the "engothed" version very much... |

Did this matter? Naw. Just needed to post this one time. Tough luck. |

Faustfx: Could you describe the process you use when developing the little color pallete that you show off to the right?
How do you choose colors and what purpose does it serve to pre-mix them?
Thanks,

Spitfire, I guess you don't know this formula:
(listens to NIN) AND (likes "The Crow") = Goth
hehe but I guess an ICT-Goth-formula is somewhat more comlicated
