that's really good, francis. the machine looks real nice and solid. awesome job on that. the girl is good from the waste up, i think; the legs are a little weird.. especially the boots. i can imagine how great this image would look with a fully rendered background, but that would be quite time consuming :] again, nice job. |

Looks great! The detail on the machine is fantastic.
I think her chin is too small, but maybe you wanted it this way. I'm only nitpicking...

I gota ask... Whats the lid for? Looks like thats a seat shes sitting on to me. Seems like that lid woudl smoosh her. Is that lid a sheild of some sort? Or does she sit inside the Mech?
You prolly have this all figured out and I just didn't spot it. Still trying to train my eyes.

Francis, I love this painting!
I think the lighting on the bot is stunning! The shading and the cast shadows make it look very real. Although I think you could push it a tad further with diffuse light, or radiosity, whatever you want to call it. You sort of done a bit of that already on the right bottom side, which looks good. I would love to see that continued in other areas as well. Spooge was talking about this in one of his other threads (I think it was the Aliasmoze repaint?). Where two surfaces meet in a tight corner, light has more trouble reaching the corner the deeper it gets in, resulting in more shade. I think there are numerous places in this painting where you could apply this for added realism.
As for the lines... Just shade over them. What you could try, to get a nice clean edge, is to make a quick lasso selection of the edge and some of the area of the form on one side, polish it up in quick mask, convert back to lasso, hide it for better view, and then use the smudge tool to pull and smudge some of the inner shading over your lines. The edge of your selection will make sure the rest is preserved. Make sure to smudge with the shading/detail direction as much as possible. I hope this makes a bit of sense.
COoL!

correct me if i'm wrong.. but a 'Fuchikoma' is a type of quadrupedal mech, as seen most notably in masume shirow's 'ghost in the shell'... so she's sitting on it in reverse of how she would pilot it (think of more of an low motorcycle riding stance, facing forward) which is what the lid's for..
but i could be wrong; the but regardless that's some great stuff
i like the musculature and somewhat sensical outfit, but her face is a bit too angular for my tastes. but that's just my preference.

Woah! Cool mecha. Didn't know they developed another version of fuchikoma, hehe. I like it very much; not much to crit. The only thing that bugs me is that I hate american style heroines on such cool asian style mecha-designs! But that's just me, I've been an Otaku back then... |

Quit your whining Francis. Start drawing comics then. You, FE, Rinaldo, and I could probably push out some issues. (I'm useless, but I can point at things and tell you to do stuff like my supervisor does.)
By the way this pic rocks. I think you should do your backgrounds in lineart also. |

Francis.. this is amazing! The shading is quite good indeed! excellent work! (Ahh, cigar smoking chicks.. hehe=))
The only thing I see wrong is the perspective, which is different on the vehicle than the terrain it lies on... still, very awesome indeed! |

Very cool, Francis!
This must be one of my favorite pictures from you
One crit:
The boot on the girl looks boxy in a way
(the one that's closest to us) It might be right, but i just think that the shape of it is pretty poor compared to the rest wich is
exellent. Do you know what i mean?

Wow, very nice. I especially like the front part of the mech, where it's shadowed. I think the linework is less apparent there. But the way you have the linework showing through in some areas definitely gives it your particular style. I love the decals and safety lights. The technique on the girl just seems a little different, though.

Definitely one of your cooler pieces Francis . . . personally, I'd tighten up the background a bit.
Shirow would dig it, I bet.

damn franics! Awesome pic! Man, you're making me nervous here....i suck...
The lighting on the mech is very nice...
I dig the fact that the lines are still showing through....gives it a nice style.
Only crit: at this perspective, it seems the mech is missing its front right leg (its right, not our's). Even if the leg is bent towards the back, you should probably see some of it under the belly.
Stop drawing!! I'm stressing!

Others have given specific critiques, I'd like to address your comment that you're doomed to be a drawer. The fact is that you've spent your whole life doing technical style drawings, doing concept sketches, and doing concept renderings. It's only logical that you would have a very strong tendency to draw/paint in this style. The colors, the shading, the lines-they're all just concept drawings, even though the setup and composition are not in that styel.
So the question becomes this: How do you adopt a style that's the reverse of what your habits are? Well, in martial arts, I lead with my left, cause I'm right handed. If someone were to tell me, OK, now you have to rotate your hand left instead of right whenever you punch, I'd be all screwed up for a time. The way to overcome it is to force yourself, in a very considered fashion, to do that which you're not use to. Watching others do it helps too. Study the Dean Cornwell book. Try mimicking his style for a coupe paintings. The more you practise in that style, the more you'll be comfortable with that style, and be able to summon it at will. Good luck,

Francis:
This image rules! I love pretty much everything about this!
If I had to be super critical I would point out that you seem to have a tendency to draw fairly large eyes, and sometimes they seem a bit too closely put together on the face (ie. the girl running with guns blazing, and this girl). Also I would maybe soften the cheek/jawline/chin a bit, because to me it tends to really 'emasculinate' [is that a word?] her a bit too much.
Keep in mind, I'm trying to come up with something useful to say, outside of 'Hey its great!
Can't wait to see more from you!

I have to agree with everyone else, especially Anthony. This picture is sVVeeT.
I wish I could buy mecha like that as toys.
Danny is right about the radiant underlighting for the left side of the mecha... something very, very subtle under there would create contrast from the background.
Oh, and another way you can fill over your lines if you really wanted (but why...?) is to Magic Wand the inside of a shape and then expand the border 2 or three pixels. Then fill it with an opaque color. I just thought of it, so maybe I should try it first.
Of course, that'd work best for 2-color inked images though it should overcome the fuzz from scanned pencil and 24-bit RGB inked. images.

a picture says more than a thousand words..
A visual explanation then....
Step 1:
Step2:
Step3:
Sorry for the lameness, but I'm a bit busy at the moment. I hope that explains it a little better.
A side note, if you use this, pay close attention that you don't subtract too much of the mass of the object you are removing the line from. If you do, you can invert the selection and smudge in the other direction to some extent.
The nice thing about using the quickmask tool is that you can keep switching back and forth quickly (Q) to modify your selection if it doesn't fit comfortably. I suggest using the paintbrush set to 100% without stylus opacity, to modify/paint the quickmask. This works the fastest.
You also will have to keep a closer eye on the legibility of your forms once you remove your lines. They might fall away into the background if there's little contrast between them.
I use this method quite frequently.. It's an excellent way to keep ones egdes in order.

Is quickmask a function of PS or is it just what you are calling this technique? |
