...but heres where I'm at now:
Ya like that extended right hand?
Some Protoss influence, yes. Sorry, I like Samwise's stuff.
An atempt at using markers for that cool "concepty" look.
I want my art work to be more realistic looking, than this cartoonish look I have right now. I think thats due to a lack of human Anantomy. I try and do frame sketchings from the pictures at www.desktopgirls.com Anyone have some other good sites with males and females for poses?
I have a "Dynamic Anatomy" book by: Burne Hogarth Printed in 1958, any one heard of this guy? I'm tryin to study this for now, till I get my lazy-as into college.
Thanks for any time any of you put into feed back for me.
Yoinks!,
Jeff
(Speeling mistakes can be looked over very easily... See you just did, cool eh?) |

jHof-how old are you, and have you had any art classes yet? I need to get some idea of your background a bit.
Definitely start with drawing from life, not just human anatomy. If you are to become a concept artist, you are going to be called upon to design more than just figures. Drawing from life, be it a tree, car, or person, is helpful in every way possible so long as you walk away with a better understanding of something regarding what you just drew.
A good cheap book to start with is How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. This book is really good with information on just about everything. ANd it covers a great many subjects within art. Start here and from there, there is a bibliography in the back of the book that goves a great book list of other necessary art books.
My first impression is that the graphics and fonts have stronger emphasis in the images than the actual art itself. THe graphic elements should be secondary to the image, not the dominate part of it.
They are good attempts, but they do lack some qualities that really strong images contain. I think by hitting the books, drawing from life, and possibly enrolling yourself in art classes, including figure drawing would be very beneficial if this is the path you wish to wander down.
Good luck with your studies, and hope to see you around the forum again sometime.

jHof-
I agree completely with Flick Stone, draw as much from life as you can, also consider picking up reference material, such as clothing design or cultural costumes.
I am aiming for a job in conceptual art too. I'm currently going to Henry Cogswell College in Everett Washington.
You should check it out, there are very few colleges in the nation that give you a comprehensive degree and good experience.
Cogswell's staff are all professionals and our board of advisers includes Lynn Gurra, lead artist of Lucas Arts, and Ian McCaig.
If you don't know who Ian is, I suggest you find out.
A good sight to check out is:
www.dchiang.com
or look up Robota on the web.
Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more of your stuff. |

Oh, almost forgot, what kind of markers do you use? I like prisma color. I prefer to work in 20%, 30%, 40%, and 60% gradation markers in cool or warm grey.
Check'um out.
Here's a pic I posted last week if you're interested or can even see it. For some reason angelfire sucks. Beware! www.angelfire.com/art/cvi/alienambassador.jpg

Hey, thanks for notic'n... I've been read'n your posts alot, since your in the feild I want get into.
I'm 21 this year, I've had just 4 years of high school art. Which is basicly a mear 1 hour a day type thing. I had 3 art classes at one time for my Senior year. Teachers claim I'm decent at clay sculpting and visualising things that see.
I was accepted to Savannah College of Art and Design in Gerogia this year. But I just didn't know how to round every thing up to pay for it all. Plus I found I could save alot of money doing the basic classes they put you threw, at a community college. Ah well, thats over with. I need to go with what I have right now.
I actually have the "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way", I haven't touched it in about 4 years though. I'll have to look at it again, since my learning skills are a bit better these days.
The job that I want to have would be working for a game company. I would be drawing up concept art for them. As well as once the design phase of the game is underway, start doing textures/skins. I really dig doing textures. I should prolly post some of those some day here...
Thats what I invision my dream career being, theres prolly more aspects involved in that position then I'm aware of right now. But I'll figure that out after I get my basics down I guess.
I should prolly goto CCS, I live like... 40 minutes from it. The Lead art guy for the new Star Wars went there for a time I think.
Welp, thats me right now. I think I'll scan in my prisma color picture I did in 11th grade. I won best colored pencil in the state of Michigan for the Scholastics compition. Got a little gold key for it. Hee hee...
Thanks for again for any input any of you have. And thanks F.F.Stone for you time. I notice you post during the night when I'm on. I'm a early 3rd shift Tech support for an ISP. Drunk people using computers should be illegal...

Wow, you was writ'n that as I was writ'n mine. Funky....
Thanks for your feed back, I'll check into that college. I mainly get scared at the financial stuff when applying, but some day I'll figure it out.
I use the Prismacolor marker cool and warm sets. I wana get the 120 marker set soon here... (err 144? I forget.)
I should post more stuff, but I gota actually finish stuff huh? Those were just 10-20 minute sketches. Prolly to much time for a pencil sketch, ah-well I'm learn'n...
Thanks for he info. I dig on Lucasarts, I almost thought about applying to San Fransisco Academy of Arts untill I found out the price. That place can get you interns there at Lucasarts. I never really new any lead art names at Lucasarts, but I really dig those concept pecies when you install Jedi Knight.
Aight, I'm out... Gota read some more on this Dynamic Anatomy book.
Again, thank you for any of your time.

Doug Chiang is the lead art guy for starwars.
You might want to check out some of the "Art of StarWars" books. Gives you a very good idea as to what you may be expected to do, even in gaming.
I'm turning 21 in November I'll toast to your success haha. |

Dunno if that's helpful, I'm interested in conceptual design among other things. I follow a plan, hehe, I'm currently on second one. 1) loose drawing skills, 2) ability to see shapes in very few lines, 3) good hand-eye coordination, 4) visual memory. 3 is basically life drawing. |
